We are Jackson County residents who support the fair and sensible growth of our community. We oppose the construction of a Wal-Mart Supercenter at Highway 13 and Country Club Road. A Supercenter at this site would cost at least $10 million in taxpayer funded road and utility construction. It would destroy property values and quality of life for dozens of rural families, and would create health and safety hazards on nearby roads. Costs for traffic accidents and law enforcement would be over $300,000 per year.



We understand Murphysboro's financial problems. We are not trying to drive Wal-Mart from Murphysboro. We respect Wal-Mart's employees and their jobs. Our goal is straightforward. We are asking Wal-Mart to find a site in Murphysboro that does not need huge taxpayer subsidies, does not hurt small businesses, and does not destroy the value of nearby homes.
