About [Edit]
THE TERN VISION
The Travelers Earth Repair Network [TERN] is a project of Friends of the Trees Society. TERN has a vision of world where every region is self-reliant in food and natural resources. We believe everyone everywhere can have the most abundant, nutritious, delicious and varied diet imaginable, produced locally for the most part. With basic food security satisfied, there can still be plenty of scope for producing specialty foods for trade with other climatic regions. There are literally thousands of food and resource plants available to us from around the world.
TERN links travelers with individuals and organizations in countries around the world who are involved with sustainable forestry, sustainable agriculture, permaculture, restoration and environment issues. TERN provides travelers with lists of contacts in the designated region[s] of travel. There are over 3,500 addresses in our TERN database from over 100 countries. TERN has over 250 Hosts which offer living arrangements and opportunities for hands-on involvement. TERN offers an excellent way to travel, gain valuable experience, and help the Earth at the same time! If you are interested in being a TERN Host or Traveler send for applications. Hosts listed free. TERN posters available. Can you put a poster up at a place where ecologically conscious people congregate? The posters are designed for hostels, colleges, universities, travel stores, environment organizations, etc. Each poster contains 30 travelers application forms.
TERN also wishes to point prospective travelers towards Earth-repair training, which is becoming more and more available in the U.S. and other countries. See the Green Front Reports I and II for sections on Educational Opportunities in Sustainable Agriculture and Earth Repair. Good intentions are noble but without the proper sensitivity towards others and with little practical knowledge and skills, some traveling Earth Repairers would be more of a burden than a help to their hosts. There are tens of thousands of failure stories from aid and development projects over the past twenty years. The number of successes are a small percentage. Much of this failure was the result of "Western Experts" imposing their "solutions" on locals. For development projects to succeed the local people must be intimately involved in conceptualization, planning and implementation processes.
