About [Edit]
The Building Movement Project supports U.S.-based nonprofits in building democracy by strengthening the role of US nonprofit organizations as sites of democratic practice and to advance ways groups can significantly contribute to building movement for progressive social change.
Building Movement uses four strategies to amplify the voice and power of low-income and other marginalized communities through nonprofit organizations:
- Identifying and working with social service organizations and other nonprofit groups as neglected sites for social change activities where staff and constituents can be engaged as active participants in addressing larger systemic change;
- Supporting younger leaders who bring new ideas and energy to social change work, and the promise of developing new forms of movement building;
- Engaging staff members in grassroots and community-based groups to strengthen their ability to discuss difficult issues ranging from values to policy change; and
- Promoting to the nonprofit sector values of movement building, social change and social justice.
The Project works on a team model. It has a small core staff in New York City and a team of social change activists from across the United States. The team and staff members conceptualize and implement Building Movement’s goals and activities based on their experiences, joint learning, and knowledge of the field. Current team members are
