About [Edit]
Uganda is known as the Pearl of Africa because of its beautiful landscape, rivers, lakes and mountains. Although most of Uganda is relatively stable, northern Uganda has been plagued by war for nearly 20 years. Rebel activities continue in the north and west of the country and cattle rustling is common in the northeastern part of Uganda. There are also new security concerns in the Congo.
CRS activities in Uganda began as early as 1965 as an outreach of the Kenya program in response to the desperate situation of Sudanese refugees living mainly in the northern part of the country, followed by influx of refugees from the Congo and Rwanda in the 1980's.
CRS officially opened its office in Uganda in October 1996. The program focus was then on northern Uganda due to the on-going war led by rebels of the Lords Resistance Army, which have been fighting the Uganda government since 1987. CRS Uganda works to provide care and support to people affected by HIV and AIDS, Micro-Finance, Sustainable Agriculture, Emergency Response, Education, Global Solidarity and Partnership, Peace and Justice. The program has now enlarged to 56 staff positions 41 national & 4 international including the Micro Finance Regional Technical Advisor. CRS currently maintains three offices, the head office in Kampala and two sub-offices in Fort Portal, western Uganda and Gulu district in northern Uganda.
The Republic of Uganda is a land locked country in East Africa, bordering Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Uganda is still a rural country with agriculture being the dominating sector of the economy employing over 80% of the work force.
