About [Edit]
Georgia Legal Watch is a non-profit public interest law firm based in Athens, Georgia that advocates for improving and sustaining Georgia`s natural resources by using:
* Community outreach and education,
* Partnerships,
* Litigation, and
* Public policy initiatives.
Georgia Legal Watch is a nonprofit public interest law firm that advocates for improved water resources through community outreach & education, litigation, public policy initiatives, and partnerships with other organizations. Since our founding in 1992, we have distinguished ourselves from similar organizations by providing more than just legal representation. We offer a unique blend of legal and technical expertise and community organizing skills to augment the effectiveness of citizen action on clean water issues.
Our decade of public service includes:
> Landmark Clean Water Act lawsuit against the EPA. The TMDL ["Total Maximum Daily Load"] legal victory caused a national shift in water quality management. Our subsequent enforcement litigation, scientific, technical, and community outreach efforts have had broad effect at the state and local levels.
> 25+ successful Clean Water Act suits aimed at Georgia`s most intransigent polluters. Our legal services are provided free of cost. In addition, we have distributed nearly a million dollars in non-penalty settlements to various grassroots environmental groups around the state. One recent legal victory allowed us to direct funds which otherwise would have been paid as penalties to the federal treasury to establish a nature park and to provide start-up money for the Savannah Riverkeeper.
> Public interest litigation to prevent waste and abuse of public resources. Example: we stopped the state`s policy of cutting down publicly-owned trees in front of billboards [Garden Club v. DOT-- Ga Supreme Ct].
> Authoring and educating legislators about major public interest state legislation. Now on the books, as a result of our efforts: [1] a water law to prevent inter-basin transfers of waste water; [2] a free speech law to protect citizens against abusive litigation, or "SLAPP" suits. Our Executive Director was subsequently elected to the State Senate.
> Litigation to protect children from lead in drinking water [GEO & SAFE v. Miller-- Federal Court].
> Advised and assisted citizens in conservation battles. Successful fights resulted in the first ecosystem-wide sea turtle protection plan [Coastal Georgia and barrier islands]; halting Olympic development in a national wildlife refuge[Savannah]; protection of a major wetland and forest area[Middle Georgia]; and stopping a proposed outer perimeter highway [Athens, Georgia].
