Houston Animal Rights Team was started in 1983 with the purpose of "using education to end animal cruelty." H.A.R.T. is located in Houston, Texas.
The mission of the Houston Animal Rights Team is to foster a more humane ethic for the treatment of animals, both domestic and wild, via education of the citizens of the city of Houston about animal welfare and animal rights issues. These issues concern the following areas the use of animals for entertainment (circuses, dog and horse racing, cock-fighting and rodeos), cosmetics and product testing on animals, the fur industry, the meat and dairy industry, hunting and fishing, pet theft, pound seizure, and more.
H.A.R.T.'s goal of public education is work toward in a number of ways, including distributing literature at local events, music shows and festivals, speaking to classes at local schools and universities, hosting lectures and regular meetings that are open to the public, publishing an organizational newsletter, hosting vegan potlucks and vegan food giveaways for various events, and maintaining a website that also provides links to other animal welfare organizations (both local and national).
