About [Edit]
GeneWise organizes communities and coalitions to take direct action to protect our food, health, and environment from the impact of untested genetically engineered crops and nanotechnology produced products.
Who We Are
GeneWise is a Chicago-founded and Midwest-based non-profit organization which actively engages in a variety of direct action, public education and awareness programs and events centering on the human health and environmental effects of genetic engineering and nanotechnology, while at the same time advocating very clearly the need for organic and sustainable agriculture in general, and local organic food production as a goal in particular. GeneWise believes that the patenting of life is a question humanity does not have the capacity, nor the tools, to understand and make decisions about, and has occurred with no public debate.
We have been active in taking direct action to limit the spread of genetically engineered food while educating the public and affecting change on the biotech issue since our founding after the National Genetic Engineering Conference in Chicago in 2001.
GeneWise relies on and is a success because of, the talent, dedication and determination of its members and independent supporters. GeneWise Core-Group membership is comprised of doctors, farmers, nutritionists, college professors, artists, musicians, health care professionals, nurses, parents, grandparents, students, journalists, construction workers, nuns, ministers, and chefs.
GeneWise is a consensus-based organization open to anyone and everyone concerned about the relationship of nature, humanity, food, and agriculture, social and environmental justice. GeneWise fills a critical role as a hub of citizen action and educational organizing in the Midwest, precisely the area in need of advocacy, direct action and education on genetically modified organisms (GMO) and local sustainable organic food, public health, and environmental and patenting issues. GeneWise continues to grow a wide base of citizen support and involvement to continue this effort, in collaboration with local, regional, national and international groups.
What We Do
Community and youth organizing and outreach and events, explaining what biotechnology and nanotechnology are and offering the alternatives. Maintaining accessibility for youth and the community while providing the opportunity to work with GeneWise and connect people to larger networks, giving them the opportunity to participate in direct action, and attend important conferences and events, locally, regionally, and nationwide.
Continuing development of speaker/spokespersons bureau, within GeneWise’s core-group, as well as with national colleagues and sources in the Midwest to meet the growing demand for speakers at group meetings and events.
Continuation of direct action organizing, development of creative events, press conferences, strategy and constructive communication to garner significant press coverage on the GMO issue as it pertains to human health and the environment, and patenting issues, locally and regionally.
Develop website, list serve, and core-group, continuing collaboration, outreach and coalition work with local and regional and national groups, such as Illinois Stewardship Alliance, Growing Power and Ecovida as well as GEAN, The Genetic Engineering Action Network, GE-Free Vermont, GE-Free Maui and Kuai, and GE-Free Mendocino County, CA. GeneWise utilizes a collaboration with creative communications groups on specific project work to continue to draw attention to and influence public debate on the applications of genetic engineering and nanotechnology.
