About Heal The Ocean
Heal the Ocean is one of the most successful non-profit ocean-environmental groups in the country. Our focus is on wastewater infrastructure – sewers and septic systems – as well as ocean dumping practices that have contributed to ocean pollution that closes Santa Barbara beaches.
While we are focused on Santa Barbara County, our methods are now serving as a model for other coastal communities across the country.
Heal the Ocean hires engineers, experts, researchers and scientists, lawyers, GIS mappers and university laboratories to produce reports and to give us test results as well as sewer engineering blueprints.
We perform cost feasibility studies for upgraded wastewater management methods. We have conducted DNA tests in watersheds and well as virus tests in the ocean. We work with city, county and state agencies to initiate new programs of wastewater upgrade.
We believe ocean pollution – fed by groundwater, creeks, rivers, streams and storm drains – must come to a halt.
Heal the Ocean has earned its most excellent reputation by taking a common sense approach. We directly work with property owners toward wastewater upgrades; we help homeowners abandon improperly placed septic systems that pollute groundwater, creeks, and ultimately - the ocean.
We recently concluded a successful campaign to get rid of one of California’s last sewage waivers – and one of our methods was to dive and video the outfall! The Goleta Sanitary District has agreed to upgrade its plant to full secondary treatment levels.
Our Philosophy
It`s simple: The ocean can no longer be used as a dump. Heal the Ocean is attacking all obvious sources of ocean pollution.
