About [Edit]
Urban. Livable. Sustainable.
Friends of Seattle is a membership-based advocacy group whose mission is to network together a community of voters who inspire elected officials to support a more urban, livable, and sustainable city. We organize community events, propose policy reforms, lobby elected officials, and endorse candidates for office.Progressive Urbanism: Our Vision for Seattle
Friends of Seattle envisions a city that grows substantially in the next fifty years, yet becomes an even better place to live. Seattle residents and local government act progressively to create a sustainable, healthy, and livable future for all who live here, while respecting our unique cultural, environmental, and architectural assets.
To achieve this future, Seattle can and should aspire to be a city of walkable neighborhoods, more affordable housing, an efficient transit network, a restored natural ecology, and more parks and public gathering spaces, all while taking responsibility for its impact on the environment.
Who We Are
Friends of Seattle is a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy group that represents Seattleites committed to a comprehensive set of values and principles for creating a more livable and sustainable city. We base our mission and vision on the premise that Seattle's growth is an opportunity to create positive changes. We support the efforts that are underway to manage growth by improving the city's urban design and transportation network, yet we believe our city must take additional steps to achieve a sustainable future. We believe the solution to this problem is to unite the people of Seattle behind a common vision for a progressive city and to organize them for political action.
At this point in our development, all staff are volunteers. A board of directors (the "Executive Board") governs the organization. A steering committee operates the organization.
