About [Edit]
Transition Whidbey was founded in January 2008 as a Washington State non-profit corporation. We were inspired into action in August 2007 after learning of Rob Hopkins and the Transition Towns relocalization movement and energy descent action plan. Our mission is to catalyze our community to work together toward greater food, energy, and economic self-reliance in response to predicted energy and resource constraints.
We now have over 350 members who have joined the conversation that we believe will help shape our transition toward a more local, more resilient Whidbey Island community! We welcome new Whidbey Island members constantly.
Our approach to relocalizing our community is to encourage and support the formation of action groups that will help establish a more sustainable and fulfilling future for our island community. Transition Whidbey currently supports several action groups including a food system asset mapping project, an alternative transportation group, and the Whidbey Community eXchange: our unique local currency. We also have an online discussion forum where members can share personal objectives; post local food, energy, or economics events and arrange carpools; start conversations on anything related to local sustainability; or post links to headlines and articles of note. Transition Whidbey hosts a lending library where videos and literature on peak oil can be checked out for personal use or for community educational events. Since August of 2008, we've hosted monthly community "Potlucks With a Purpose" where we discuss, celebrate, eat, share and gather support for our movement.
