Part-Time Field Educator Watershed Education Program with Save The Bay (oakland downtown) Reply to: see below Date: 2008-12-22, 9:04AM PST Overview Save The Bay has been working since 1961 to celebrate, protect, and restore the San Francisco Bay. Save The Bay’s Watershed Education Program is the only environmental education program in the Bay Area that connects middle and high school students and their teachers to the Bay through canoeing and through the restoration of critical wetland habitat. Using the San Francisco Bay as our classroom and laboratory, we offer field trips at over ten sites around the Bay that teach and inspire ecological stewardship and community leadership. We educate students from diverse communities around the Bay and help to build a connection between them and their local community and environment. Our award-wining programs are derived from best practices in environmental education and aligned to the California Content Standards. For more information about Save The Bay, please visit our website at www.saveSFbay.org POSITION DESCRIPTION: Our part-time field educators lead our Canoes In Sloughs program that has earned Save The Bay the reputation as a leading provider of watershed education in the Bay Area. Educators will teach safe canoeing and provide students with hands-on, experiential activities related to wetland ecology, watersheds and the San Francisco Bay while maintaining an inspiring and safe environment. Our field educators play a key role in making the program relevant to students’ lives, communities and cultural backgrounds. This is a great position for someone who has classroom or outdoor teaching experience and is passionate about working with youth and protecting San Francisco Bay. Responsibilities: • Lead Canoes In Sloughs day trips for diverse groups of middle and high school students and their teachers at our canoeing sites around the Bay •Inspire and motivate students through positive reinforcement, role modeling and learner-centered teaching •Engage students through implementing hands-on, experiential activities tailored to the age and needs of the school group • Create a culturally sensitive learning environment actively embracing cultural diversity and bringing cultural relevancy to science content • Exercise excellent judgment around group and risk management and reinforce rigorous safety standards during field trips •Lead preparatory in-classroom programs prior to field trips •Prepare and team-teach field trips with other field educators •Drive a truck towing a canoe trailer on Bay Area freeway •Assist with maintenance of trailers, trucks, canoes, tools and equipment, and safety and paddling gear •Perform administrative work associated with field programming Qualifications: Required: • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (advanced degree or teaching credential a plus) and 1-2 years relevant teaching experience • Experience teaching in the outdoors or in the classroom and a working knowledge of the natural sciences, coastal ecology, marine biology or related field •Experience working with diverse student populations and people with differing ability levels • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire youth in grades 5 through 12Physical ability to lift and carry heavy objects (65 lb. canoes and other equipment), performing rescues of people and equipment •Ability to implement and model risk management practices and maintain a safe environment for students and teachers •Strong swimming skills •Valid California drivers license and a clean driving record •You must have your own vehicle or unrestricted access to a vehicle •Ability to work Saturdays • Wilderness First Aid and CPR certified (If not certified, training courses are offered frequently and partially subsidized by Save The Bay.) Preferred: •Knowledge of Bay ecology and environmental issues impacting San Francisco Bay •Experience teaching urban ecology •Boating, canoeing and paddling experience •Fluency in Spanish or an Asian language Salary and benefits: ●Part-time compensation starts at $16.00/hour ●Transportation reimbursement for travel to distant program sites ●Training and professional development opportunities The position starts the week of February 17th, 2009 and runs part-time, averaging 3 days per week with programs hosted Monday-Saturday.
