Hi Toni,

Welcome to WiserEarth! Thanks for stopping by and the typo pointer (fixed that of course). Let me know if you have any question or need any help in becoming familiar with the site.

Greetings ~ I just joined today and in checking out the site came across this editing opportunity.  Of course I'm not eligible for a while, but just thought you'd like to know that you have a typo on this page ;) --> "Have good understanding of WiserEarth's mission, potential, community, and tools."

I'm looking forward to becoming familiar with all that this site has to offer.  I'm glad that I found you.  Everyone keep up the good work!

Sm_avatar

Dear Lissa. Thank you for stepping forward. Could you kindly go to this wikipage and follow the instructions there? Also, it would help others who want to give you endorsements if they can read more about you in your profile. So, you might want to write more about yourself there.

Given your background, it seems that Outreach role is also a good fit for you. Since you can apply to take on more than one editor role, please list both AoF Editor and Outreach in the wikipage if you so wish.

I would like to work as an AoF editor. I am a full-time writer and work as a communications professional helping not-for-profits use new media to communicate their messages and help their causes. I keep up-to-date on many of the issues discussed in the Wiser Earth community and believe I can make a positive contribution.

Hiya Mike,

Good to see ya back here. I think your volunteer work paid off handsomely and had helped people beamingly smile the world over ;-) Thanks for the wonderful work you've done in WE and for stepping forward as AoF Editor. I've nominated you to remain as editor in this wikipage. Best wishes for landing your next dream job Mike.

Cheers,

Bowo

Hey Bowo,

The editor roles have been beautifully laid out!!

I would very much like to still be a part of WE in some form, as soon as I am more secure job-wise.  It might have been bad timing for me to be doing volunteer political work the months before the election..ah well.

For the time being, I think I'd like to be an AOF editor.  I am still doing work with the Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI) as well, so you all definitely havent seen the last of me, haha.

Its very cool to see the work youve done w/Editors and to see people returning.  Hello Randy, Deborah  :)

Stay cool all,

Mike

Shoma. Thank you so much for your willingness to help. However, as you've probably read above, one of the requirements to apply as an editor is to be a WiserEarth community member for at least three months. You might want to spend your next three months here to get to know the platform, content and community. Completing your profile and uploading a real photo of yourself would be a good start to let others know more about you and your work.

We look forward to seeing more of you around. Please drop me a message if you have any question, suggestion or need any help. Best regards, Bowo.

I am unsure what it is exactly I "rated"? Is it my comment or this article? or the discussion below?  Seems like a sort of non-intuitive set up?  My intention was not to rate the article with 5 stars!

I looked at "mike"'s profile Randy, I think he is past staff: thus no longer paid to be here, probably moved on to better/ more productive places for activism?  I noticed a comment he made about facebook. Perhaps you could find him there.

Bowo I am not sure whether some of your recent activities here are for the good ... or micro-managing?  I think it might be ok to step back and let users of the site discuss some?  Your opinion is of course always welcome, but perhaps more fore-thought and diplomacy might work toward your organizations best interest?

Best,

Sm_avatar

@Randy:

Thank you for understanding. I do think that violence on the 'intangible' (as well as on the 'tangible') is ever present as part of the human condition, and does constitute one of the 'spices of life'. WiserEarth's community guidelines opted to go the 'polite and civil' way I think to help move us away from the state of violence to nonviolence (both in the 'tangible' and 'intangible'). Needless to say, this is my personal interpretation/opinion. I like how you put it: "agree to be disagreeable at least on civil terms".

Please go to this wikipage for instructions on how to apply to be an editor. Thanks for stepping forward Randy. (P.S. Perhaps you can drop Mike a message? I kinda miss him too.)

@ucant:

The simple answer to your question is that WiserEarth is a work in progress. Editors with the above roles wish to help things move forward. Whether we will be successful or not is left for time to tell. Thanks.

Sm_avatar

Bowo,

Given everything I am involved with it is likely the most I can give the Wiserearth Editors Group is an hour or two every other week or so if this would qualify under the new terms of service. Also-I am aware of the Community Guidelines and if you look at the history of my writings on wiserearth you will see I have always maintained a respect for others opinions. If I differ at all it is because I am an old free speech advocate from the sixties and seventies and I see reality for what it is. I doubt very much that violence on the “intangible” as you say that’s the spoken word or thoughts will ever dissipate unto their own accord and something in me says that this may well be dangerous for the long term health on a social diversity basis for our species. We might actually lose some of the spice for living if this were to happen. This does not mean however that we sit around and take the anger, rage, abuse, hostility or violence from others. This does mean that we are and become vigilant toward the process of wrestling things down to the mat as I have said until we reach a point that we can agree to be disagreeable at least on civil terms.

As far as the ending of the "tangible" as you say or physical violence I feel that this is absolutely doable given time and the right or proper social tools. This is where violence in its former state has been ameliorated but people being what we are we must provide a social mechanism across time that will on a consistent basis act as a check valve allowing people the ability to blow off steam in a constructive rather than a destructive manner.

I see wiserearth as one type of social tool that could be used to further the process I describe in the above paragraphs. This is why when asked by Michael Kwan to join the wiserearth editors some time ago I did so. Say where has Michael been lately?

Just stopping back, be cool,

Randy

Without putting too much time into this (but with the intention to help teach he who seems to think himself a teacher):

Perhaps you could start with an explanation of why this website is not used (Inclusive of both those with "editor" status, and those without). Than work in the direction of explaining why and how your editor power granting system will correct this.  And than attempt to arrive at an explanation for how this system will correct real problems in the real world.

You might start an article or wiki for this, or a discussion in the main forum.  It will be interesting to see if you gather any collaborators for this important work.
Your comments were on spot Randy, thank you for your contributions!
Best,
Sm_avatar

@Peter:

Would be great to have you on board too. However, as you may have noticed, four existing editors will need to endorse you before you can be an editor. I will send you further details via internal message. Thanks!

@Randy:

Yes, listening to and respecting different (and opposite) ideas/opinions/perspectives is a must to achieve a balanced view of things and a good synthesis. The problem with the comment that is 'suppressed' below is that it contains very very little (or I would say none) such ideas/opinions/perspectives. So, there's not much (or nothing) to elaborate upon. What's present is just that, hostility.

And while there are different levels of tolerance in the world wide web regarding how discussions are carried out, WiserEarth choose to adopt the civil and respectful way of doing so. WiserEarth is here to help cultivate a culture of peace. Please read our community guidelines for details. It is of course imperfect and open to improvements, so do please provide feedback in the comment section of that page if you have some.

For your information:

  • the comment is still viewable by editors and admins (not to users). Perhaps other editors can attest to the truth of my statement above.
  • you can see a recent comment on my profile page from user TDStong to see how I personally tolerate and even welcome different ideas/opinions/perspectives.
In the end, imho, not only do we need to end violence in the tangible, we also need to do it in the intangible, which includes words and thougths.

Dear Bowo and all others out on Wiserearth,

Presently I am in the inception process of creating a new field of human endeavor that I simply call Planetary Development. I have a website at www.planetarydevelopment.com where if you were to go to that site one of the first things you would notice is the fact that I have there a pathway of direct communication to me. Since I have started the website from scratch a couple of years ago I have received comments of both the positive and negative nature. In fact I have gotten comments from people that have been not only hostile but gross and strangely enough I still live to tell the tail. In fact it has been my experience that answering the call of such type of say hostile statements has indeed given me insights into the human condition I was either unaware of or blind to. I now look at such events as a favorable learning experience.

You see people it is one thing to be in lock step agreement moving along with everyone else but then what do we learn by that. It is another thing entirely to deal with ideas or opinions that are completely opposite or antithetic to ones own and then begin a process of wrestling things down to the mat until an ideological framework appears that is acceptable by all. In the coming field of Planetary Development this is one of the ways things will be achieved not by running away from conflict but like firemen by running straight into the fire until our human house fire we have created on our world is rendered under control.

So – this is why the statement below made by ucant 4 days ago which was removed for this reason "This comment was removed by a WiserEarth editor for the following reason: Hostile” Must be seen. We cannot be afraid of hostile or otherwise statements when in fact these kinds of things form a learning curve toward our collective ability to negotiate and thus ameliorate such emotions as they present themselves ultimately leading us toward a greater understanding and resolution within the human condition.

With respect,

Randy

Thanks Scott! Great to have someone with your expertise on board. Would be great if you can fill that out in this wikipage to get endorsements from existing editors.

I'd love to be mediator (I have a master's in dispute resolution).  I'd also like to make edits as I can, though I'm not sure how much time I'll have on a daily basis.  Either way, I'm here to help.

Thanks!
