About  [Edit]

THE ORGANIZATION:

The Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) is an
international feminist organization working to strengthen the voice,
impact and influence of women's rights advocates, organizations and
movements internationally.

DESCRIPTION:

AWID is seeking a Research Associate for our Building Feminist
Movements and Organizations (BFEMO) initiative. We know that
movement-building and women's organizing for change may take many
different shapes and forms. A long-standing challenge has been
building formal organizations that reflect feminist principles in
discourse and practice and are sustainable without becoming
de-politicized or reinforcing fragmentation. This initiative asks the
question "what kind of organizational strengthening is needed to
build stronger feminist movements?" The goals are to:

* Build greater understanding of the diverse forms of women's
organizing and organizations and how they contribute to building
collective power for realizing women's rights
* Contribute to strengthening women's organizations and feminist
movement-building

Under the supervision of the Strategic Initiative Manager, the
Research Associate will provide research and programmatic support to
BFEMO. The successful candidate will have some background experience
in a combination of the following: feminist activism, adult
education, campaigning/networking/alliance-building, organizational
development, organizing and/or political analysis and education. The
position also requires strong analytical, writing and organizational
skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

-- Conducting research (literature reviews, interviews, some
survey development and analysis)
-- Writing (syntheses of research results, editing and
proofreading, drafting occasional articles or brief content pieces)
-- Outreach and relationship building with related initiatives,
organizations and individuals
-- Occasional presentations and/or meeting facilitation as
necessary.
-- Supporting activities and sessions related to the BFEMO
initiative in the 2008 International AWID Forum.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

-- At least three years of relevant experience, particularly in
diverse contexts
-- Excellent writing and editing skills
-- A university degree, preferably with a focus on gender and
development, organization development, community development, or a
related social science field
-- Proven research and analysis skills (preferably one or more
years previous work on an action-research project, not including a
university thesis)
-- Preferably bilingual with excellent written and verbal skills in
English, as well as in Spanish and/or French.
-- Keen attention to detail and quality control.
-- Able to multi-task, and willing to perform diverse tasks as
needed in a timely manner.
-- Able to work in a diverse, fast-paced environment, with
flexibility.
-- Proactive, able to work independently and effectively in a
small, virtual team.
-- Committed to the principles and values of feminism and
anti-racism.
-- Able to travel internationally.
-- Strong administrative and extensive computer skills, including
word processing, presentation packages (Power Point), Internet, and
email.
