The Natural Capital Institute is currently hiring for the following positions:

•    Development/Fundraising Intern
•    Student Outreach Intern
•    Online Community Organizer Interns
•    Event Research Intern


Hours and Compensation:

Full-time Internship: Three-month commitment of 4 days/week, 8:30-5 PST, 30 hours minimum. This position includes a monthly stipend of $500, with travel costs reimbursed.

Development/Fundraising Intern

The Natural Capital Institute seeks to diversify its donor base as well as enhance its current online donation system. We have a place on our team for an organized, self-motivated person who will undertake market research that will help NCI devise a successful strategy to broaden its individual donor base. The Development Intern will work closely with NCI’s Development Director.

Initial Tasks will include:
•    Undertaking market research:
-Analyzing strategies and mechanisms employed by nonprofits in broadening individual donor base.  This would include special events, personal letter, direct mail etc.
-Identifying new and creative ways to increase online fundraising by tapping into networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, WiserEarth, etc.
-Preparing a report of the research findings and a set of recommendations.
-Assisting the NCI development staff in implementing some of the recommendations to broaden individual donor base
•    Maintaining donor and prospect records in the fundraising database (Salesforce), creating reports, lists and spreadsheets as requested.
•    Reviewing and proofing fundraising materials

Skills and Qualities Required:
•    Well-organized, detail-oriented, and ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
•    Excellent writing skills and research experience
•    Proficient using spreadsheet and word processing software.
•    Excellent communication skills

Student Outreach Intern

We are seeking an organized, positive, self-motivated person with experience building networks and student partnerships to assist us in spreading the word about WiserEarth. We are attempting to develop a self-sustaining program that engages the student community on WiserEarth. This will be a model that can be replicated across the world. You will co-create this set of initiatives with the Youth/Student Coordinator, Kat Mullins

Initial tasks will include:
-Researching existing environmental & social justice movements on university campuses, and the events associated with them
-Creating a database of key contacts at these schools
-Tracking student use on the WiserEarth site
-Engaging students in WiserEarth groups & discussion forums, and expanding WiserEarth groups on social networking sites
-Undertaking market research to identify successful models of student outreach in the U.S.  
-Co-Developing an outreach program with Youth Coordinator
-Creating a pilot project to test the outreach program, with measurable results.

The Student Outreach Intern will also participate in lots of fun, sustainability focused events throughout the West Coast where WiserEarth has a table or is hosting a workshop/presentation.

Skills & Qualities Required:
- Experience conducting grassroots outreach campaigns, especially in a university setting
- Research experience
- Excellent computer skills, proficient using Excel, PowerPoint & database software.
- A keen eye for designing brochures, stickers, and other student resources is a plus!
- Ability to succeed in a team setting
- Flexibility to pick up projects and tasks on an ad-hoc basis
- Passionate about affecting positive change
- Outgoing, energetic, friendly personality
- Experienced & engaged on social networking sites (Facebook etc.)

Online Community Organizer Intern

The Natural Capital Institute is seeking an online networking expert to help us improve our presence within the growing online network sites. This person will enhance and execute our communications strategy in social networking sites like Facebook and Myspace with an aim to promote WiserEarth and engage new and current users. This person will develop expertise in online organizing, communications, and marketing skills in the non-profit field.

Initial Tasks will include:

-Maintain existing profiles and groups with new content daily
-Write and post blogs, bulletins, and updates
-Grow our presence in key online social networks
-Build relationships with key online influencers
-Stay up to date on the latest social networking tools, applications and features
-Follow Google Alerts of WiserEarth and maintain the WiserEarth media page
-Conduct online research and compile reports of research findings

Skills and Qualities Required:

-Excellent writing and verbal communications skills
-Well-organized, detail-oriented, and ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks
-Strong online research skills
-Experience with online social networks
-Proficient using spreadsheets and word processing software
-Intellectual curiosity and creativity

Event Research Intern


We are seeking an organized, positive, self-motivated person with experience building networks and partnerships to assist us in spreading the word about WiserEarth. We are attempting to develop a program that engages activist communities working on environmental sustainability and social justice around the globe. Although WiserEarth’s scope is international, we need someone to assist with local outreach and engage our neighboring community members.

Initial tasks will include:

-Researching existing environmental & social justice organizations in the Bay Area and keeping close tabs on their event calendars
-Researching large and small events taking place in Central and Northern California and posting these events to WiserEarth
-Contacting the organizers of these events and introducing them to WiserEarth
-Identifying those events appropriate for outreach and collaborating with event organizers in order to appear/showcase at events
-Posting local event notices on a weekly basis for the NCI staff to attend
-Researching national and international events, such as large conferences, conventions, summits, festivals, etc.
-Working closely with the communications director to include WiserEarth in these larger events: contacting organizers, sorting out logistics, submitting proposals to present

The Event Research Analyst Intern will do a portion of his/her work at environmentally and sustainability focused events, with the opportunity to hear interesting speakers, travel, and interact directly with potential users.

Skills & Qualities Required:
- Research and outreach experience
- Excellent computer skills, proficient using Excel, PowerPoint & database software.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and experience with long term planning
- Flexibility to pick up projects and tasks on an ad-hoc basis
- Outgoing, energetic, friendly personality
