POSITION DESCRIPTION:            HABITAT RESTORATION DIRECTOR

 

Background:

Save The Bay is leading the regional effort to ensure the restoration of 100,000 acres of tidal wetlands around San Francisco Bay, the largest estuary on the West Coast, by 2020.  Scientists recommend that this amount of wetland habitat is necessary to sustain a healthy San Francisco Bay ecosystem.

 

Over the last decade, extensive progress has been made to achieve this goal.  In addition to 40,000 acres of tidal wetlands that already exists, 36,000 acres of land is being planned for restoration, including the groundbreaking South Bay Salt Ponds Restoration Project, which is the largest restoration project on the West Coast. 

 

Save The Bay advises and consults on large-scale Bay wetland restoration projects and partners with federal, state and local agencies to restore habitat around the Bay.  Since the restoration program’s inception in 2000, Save The Bay has developed and refined best practices for transition zone restoration, native plant propagation and invasive plant removal. 

 

Save The Bay’s habitat restoration program enjoys regional prominence and a national reputation for results, annually engaging thousands of Bay Area residents, students and businesses in on-the-ground restoration work.  Working with 50,000 volunteers, we have restored and maintained 100 acres of vital wetland habitat and planted more than 100,000 plants.  Save The Bay also operates two native plant nurseries where we grow up to 30,000 plants every year.

 

Position Summary:

The Habitat Restoration Director develops strategies to ensure that 100,000 acres of San Francisco Bay wetland habitat will be restored by 2020, develops best practices and techniques to influence large-scale restoration plans and shares best practices with Bay restoration scientists and restoration managers.  The Director raises funds to support Save The Bay’s restoration program goals and manages high-level partnerships with government agencies and other key stakeholders.  The Director oversees Save The Bay’s on-the-ground habitat restoration program at six sites and 5,000 volunteers annually, and plans for program growth and sustainability.  This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious professional with significant environmental or natural resource program management experience and a passion for San Francisco Bay restoration. 

 

Reports to:            Deputy Director, Policy

Supervises:            Habitat Restoration Projects Manager and Native Plant Nursery Manager

 

Primary Responsibilities:

 

Strategic Planning and Implementation

 

• Develop and implement a long-term strategic vision for Save The Bay’s habitat restoration program to achieve organizational goals.

• Analyze quantitative and qualitative restoration data, refine best practices and techniques and share information appropriately with key restoration practitioners, decision makers and stakeholders.

• Implement adaptive management techniques for Save The Bay’s on-the-ground projects.
• Ensure that Save The Bay’s demonstrated best practices and methods are included in restoration projects.
• Engage in direct communication with elected officials and decision makers to secure implementation, funding and land acquisition for Bay habitat restoration.
• Leverage restoration science, community stewardship and advocacy to meet Save The Bay’s wetland restoration goals.
• Identify and pursue partnership opportunities, new restoration sites and other expansion opportunities.

 

Fundraising, Management and Administrative Responsibilities

 

• Manage the habitat restoration program staff; support their efforts to meet site work plan goals and deliver high quality programs.
• Hire, supervise, mentor and evaluate department staff.
• Establish annual workplan goals and develop and manage department budget.

• Lead restoration fundraising efforts to grow Save The Bay’s habitat restoration program.

• Administer government contracts and grants; work closely with Finance and Development staff to ensure budgeting and reporting is accurate and on-time.
• Hire and manage consultants as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

• Five to seven years experience in wetland restoration ecology, advocacy and program management.
• Master’s degree in environmental science, natural resource management, earth systems, botany, or biology required.
• Extensive knowledge of estuarine ecology, wetland restoration and wetland biology.
• Strong supervision and management experience, with demonstrated success motivating employees to set and accomplish ambitious objectives.
• Proven leadership.
• Sets goals, manages priorities, meets deadlines; attention to detail.
• Ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders and cultivate new audiences.
• Exceptional writing and speaking skills with the ability to synthesize complex concepts into clear messages. 
• Creative, flexible, and demonstrates problem solving skills and superior judgment.
• Computer proficiency with Windows and Internet research applications.
• Enthusiasm for Save The Bay’s mission.
