Director, Indonesia and Malaysia
Location: Bogor, Indonesia
Reports to: VP, Asia Pacific (Nigel Sizer)

Travel: up to 50% (30% within Indonesia and 20% internationally).
Position Overview
The Director, Rare Indonesia is responsible for Rare's programmatic, operational, and financial outputs in Indonesia, Malaysia, East Timor and Brunei (90% of the work is Indonesia, with a little in Malaysia and less in the other countries). In line with Rare's 2007-2011 business plan, this position will manage and expand Rare's training and support of, as well as learning exchanges among, a growing portfolio of local conservationists working in critically important natural sites. Key areas of responsibility are: conservation outcomes, relationship management, financial/operational management, and some help with fundraising. This position will be based in Bogor, Indonesia (about one hour south of Jakarta).
The Director is one of four similar positions worldwide. This position is considered a senior management position and the Director will be expected to show executive decision making maturity and vision.
Rare's 2007-2011 Institutional Priorities for Rare Indonesia
The Director plays a critical role in meeting each of Rare's four main priorities for 2007-2011. These priorities are:
- Expand Rare's conservation impact.
- Build new partnerships with groups that can assist Rare's partners to overcome the barriers to conservation.
- Maintain a good working relationship with Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB), Rare's training program delivery partner.
- Enhance and continuously improve Rare's strategies and tools
- Unlock potential of an alumni network.
- Use Rare's track record and a challenge grant facility to help leverage new sources of funding.
Areas of Responsibility
Conservation Outcomes
- Select and train 12 local conservation leaders and their organizations each year, utilizing Rare's course in social marketing in partnership with IPB in Indonesia.
- Ensure meaningful conservation objectives for each campaign.
- Assist local campaign managers when developing long-term follow-up strategies and financing efforts to turn initial momentum into lasting conservation results.
- Ensure programmatic partnerships are strengthened.
Fundraising
- Work with the VP for Asia Pacific to assist with donor relations and managing funding.
- Help to write and review proposals in an effort to secure additional funding for campaigns in Indonesia and Malaysia.
- Participate in some donor trips to the region and help with donor visits in the United States, Singapore and Hong Kong.
- Help to ensure fundraising activity is well-coordinated with development staff at the headquarters office.
Relationship Management
- Manage relationships with local and regional conservation partners, the Indonesian and Malaysian governments, IPB, and some regional and national donors.
- Help to cultivate and build strong relationships with individuals, institutions and governments.
- Identify new opportunities for partnerships and funding.
- Raise profile of Rare with media and other audiences.
Financial/Operational Management
- Supervise five managers, trainers and support staff and the Bahasa-speaking alumni network.
- Create and manage the Indonesia office and training budget, including restricted and unrestricted revenue sources.
- Report regularly to the VP for Asia Pacific regarding fundraising, programmatic, staff, and financial issues.
- Report monthly on the Director's Scorecard and lead monthly conference calls with the head office.
Minimum Core Competencies Required
Rare expects its staff to have the following attributes no matter their position or level within the organization: be a team player, enthusiastic and positive, reliable, open minded, willing to learn and take initiative and ability to work well under pressure.
The Director should be comfortable with an adaptive management style in a fast-paced organization. Decision making tends to be driven through a team-based approach rather than a simple hierarchy. The style is more akin to a small dynamic company than a government agency or NGO.

Qualifications, Skills & Knowledge Requirements
- Masters or equivalent or higher preferred, in natural resources, biology, conservation practice, environmental science, environmental education or similar field. A background in marketing, training or education with a strong interest in environmental issues could be considered on an exceptional basis.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in developing countries, preferably in conservation, including ideally work with a large local NGO or international environmental group or consulting firm.
- Native fluency in written and spoken Bahasa Indonesia or Malay and fluency in English is a requirement.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to raise multi-year funding from foundations, individuals and government.
- Ability to work and manage staff in a multi-cultural setting.
- Strong public speaking skills.
- Demonstrated leadership and program management experience.
- Willingness to travel internationally based on needs of the position.
