Women In Government is a national 501(c)(3), non-profit, bi-partisan organization of women state legislators providing leadership opportunities, networking, expert forums, and educational resources to address and resolve complex public policy issues. Women In Government leads the nation with a bold, courageous, and passionate vision that empowers and mobilizes all women legislators to effect sound policy.

Women In Government is seeking a Development Director who will be responsible for leading all fundraising efforts with particular emphasis upon growth of the federal and foundation grant program. The Director provides oversight and management of the Development Department assuring that departmental tasks are completed on schedule and organizational funding goals are met. This position requires the creation and execution of a strategic plan for growth of the organization in line with Board directives. As the chief fundraiser for the organization, the Development Director must combine sponsor interests with WIG policy priorities to secure funding and build a donor base while at the same time provide stewardship of existing sponsors, attract new sponsors, and support the mission and strategic goals of Women In Government.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Direct all corporate and foundation fundraising activities in support of financial goals, including: direct solicitation (phone and in-person) and proposal writing;
  • Establish and execute a Development Plan for 2009;
  • Provide onsite representation for the Development Department at conferences and other meetings as needed;
  • Manage our grant proposals, including keeping an updated foundation prospect pool and writing proposals and LOIs;
  • Manage confirmed sponsorships including: accounts receivable, allocation of funds, internal reporting of tally to staff on a weekly basis, communications with the Policy Department and sponsor return on investment and other reporting;
  • Provide exemplary stewardship to sponsors as well as troubleshooting with sponsors should issues arise;
  • Provide leadership/oversight over all Development Department activities and staff;
  • Coordinate with the Public Policy Department and executive staff to determine key issues for fundraising, ensuring that sponsor interest matches and supports Women In Government’s mission;
  • Direct and assist staff responsible for Women In Government’s Business Council program including facilitation of Business Council Meetings, stewardship of Business Council Sponsors and building diversity of Business Council membership.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree and at least five years development and management experience, including extensive grant writing experience;
  • Successful track record in cultivating and soliciting major gifts;
  • Experience managing budgets and goals;
  • Strong analytical and quantitative abilities;
  • Exceptional ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks efficiently, and enjoy the challenge of working in a fast-paced work setting;
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and professional communications skills are essential;
  • Willingness to travel;
  • Proficient in MS – Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and the Internet. Familiarity with DonorPerfect Database a plus.
