About

Hatuchoki offers positions for those interested in volunteering with the organisation. The organisation usually enlists the help of two volunteers at a time. Volunteers will be asked to teach English and mathematics to young children, ages 4-8 yrs. Teaching takes place in the morning, so volunteers normally have the afternoon to explore the Singisi, Seela, and Tengeru areas, as well as make a trip into Arusha town. Volunteers may also be asked to assist with the other programs Hatuchoki offers. Each volunteer must be proficient in English, with the eagerness and willingness to learn and use basic Swahili. Grant proposal writing skills are valued and can be used to help Hatuchoki apply for grants. Any prior knowledge or skills in the tourism business are also appreciated since Hatuchoki also operates Meru cultural tourism tours around Singisi.  Patient, adaptable, flexible, innovative, and creative are qualities Hatuchoki looks for in their volunteers.

The Hatuchoki Foundation is located in the foothills of Mt. Meru and about 64kms from Kilimanjaro.  Hatuhcoki is surrounded by the beauty of the foothills, which are covered with banana trees and coffee plants. The area offers the tranquillity of scenic hikes to waterfalls and caves, as well as the bustling of Tengeru market down below.

Volunteers have different accommodation options. It is possible to have a true Meru cultural experience by doing a homestay.  A homestay would entail living with a local Meru family in their house or hut.  Homestays would need to be arranged in advance by contacting the Hatuchoki Foundation.  Details such as meals, transport, and volunteer costs, would preferably be discussed before arrival.  Other accommodation can be found in other areas such as Usa River, Tengeru Village, and Arusha town, where there is tourist accommodation.
