About
The Genocide Intervention Network is seeking a highly motivated and independent student or recent graduate to assist with web development, online advocacy, and online organizing initiatives.
- Summer 2008 (June, July and August)
- Fall 2008 (September until December)
Start and end dates are negotiable. The internship may be part-time or full-time. Interns who excel in their position may be offered a continuing internship if desired.
Job Description:
As an intern, you will work side-by-side the leaders of the organization in conceiving, developing and implementing innovative online campaigns to support GI-Net's initiatives. In particular, you will have the opportunity to put your ideas into action — raising money for peacekeeping in Darfur, mobilizing a diverse constituency in supporting anti-genocide legislation, and educating the public about the need for a new response to genocide.
Major Responsibilities:
- Collaborating on "action alerts" and a member newsletter/blog with the public relations and advocacy teams
- Developing campaign websites from the ground up; including dynamic coding, site architecture, and design
- Innovating new methods for member support and engagement, especially involving social networking such as MySpace, Facebook, LiveJournal, Twitter, and social media such as YouTube and Flickr
- Reaching out to online opinion-makers such as bloggers and podcasters and staying current with online discussion around anti-genocide and related issues
- Evaluating the current GI-Net website through metrics, as well as developing methods for making it more effective, accessible, and useful
- Helping to integrate online tools and modules for fundraising, advocacy, and education, including CMS, CRM, e-mail, congressional contact and donations processing systems
- Reading and staying up-to-date on other Darfur and anti-genocide organizations' projects; including blogs and newsletters, and suggesting methods for collaboration when possible
As with any small nonprofit advocacy organization, interns will be expected to help support day-to-day activities such as responding to member needs, answering donors' questions and maintaining internal documentation. In every case, these activities will involve a direct "line of sight" to our ultimate goal: ending genocide.
Requirements:
- A keen interest in translating online participation into real-world action is ideal
- Independent, responsible, and full of ideas.
- Some experience in a position of leadership is ideal, whether through campus activism, online or in social groups
- Some experience in online organizing through social networking is highly desirable
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to manage a variety of projects and priorities in an effective manner
- Strong writing skills and command of the English language
Other Specific Qualifications:
- A general comfortableness with online work and online exploration
- A basic understanding of dynamic web tools such as PHP and mySQL is helpful
- Creativity in design and accessible user interfaces
- Detailed knowledge of standards-compliant, accessible HTML/XHTML and CSS
- Experience using graphics and photo-editing tools such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
- Some experience using a content management system; GI-Net uses Drupal extensively, but any CMS experience will be useful
- Ability to build a website from the ground-up a major plus
Benefits:
The Web Developer Intern will be paid $6/hour. Interns receive $70 per month in SmartBenefits to cover local transportation costs. Lectures, panel discussions and other events are also frequently made available through allied organizations in the Darfur and anti-genocide movements.
How To Apply:
Please apply immediately by sending a résumé and cover letter to internships@genocideintervention.net. In your cover letter, please specify your preferred start and end dates for the internship, and the hours and times each week for which you are available. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. For questions about this position, please contact internships@genocideintervention.net.
The internship program, including workshops, educational events and collaboration with other activists, is designed to be on-site at our Washington, D.C. offices. Applicants who want to work remotely may apply, but they will be considered only after all on-site applicants have been considered.
Note: Due to the large volume of applications for Genocide Intervention Network internship positions, we regret that not all applicants will receive acknowledgement of their submissions.
