Habib's Garden

Connecting People to Weave a Better World

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Steve Habib Rose.  A number of us met this evening and thought that this group would be a fitting tribute. Lets use this group to recognize, honor and appreciate the many gifts and blessings he bestowed on so many of us. Please add yourself and your reflections.

About

Women's Earth Alliance is seeking a talented intern to develop training materials for its Sacred Earth Advocacy Network, a project of the Women and Land Initiative.  The Advocacy Network links pro bono legal and policy advocates with indigenous environmental justice leaders in North America.  We are currently developing training materials -- a manual as well as multimedia resources -- to prepare pro bono advocates to be effective service providers and allies.

Training will cover the following themes: (1) current legal and policy advocacy mechanisms, including Federal Indian Law, advocacy before international decision-making bodies including the U.N. and the O.A.S.' Inter-American Commission on Human Rights; (2) scholarship and practice for effective solidarity work, including anti-oppression and environmental justice lawyering; (3) advancing an earth-based, human rights policy agenda, including the precautionary principle, the principle of free, prior, informed consent, principles of Earth jurisprudence, and other emerging environmental justice and human rights policy concerns.

We are creating the following types of training materials: an in-depth manual, pod casts by experts, live meetings, and an annual Advocacy Institute.

As an intern, you will conduct research, gather materials, and develop them into workable formats for web and print.  The ideal candidate will possess at least a B.A., and possibly a J.D. or other advanced degree; demonstrated interest in environmental justice and/ or human rights advocacy and/ or activism; strong research and critical analysis skills; and abundant creativity and self-motivation.  We are located in downtown Berkeley but this work can be done remotely, so you will need to have access to a phone and an internet connection.

Please send a cover letter, resume, writing sample, and two letters of recommendation (preferred) or references. Start and end dates, as well as work schedule, are flexible.

Women's Earth Alliance unites women on the frontlines of environmental causes by coordinating training, technology, and financial support for thriving communities and Earth.  WEA’s Women and Land Initiative unites legal and policy advocates with indigenous women environmental justice leaders for advocacy towards sacred sites protection, energy justice and environmental health.  Pro bono advocates in the Sacred Earth Advocacy Network, a project of the Women and Land Initiative, provide expert technical support services to indigenous-led environmental justice campaigns against environmental destruction and towards visionary environmental and human rights policy shifts.
