Position Title: Senior Development Associate, Online Donor Cultivation

 


Scion Nonprofit Staffing (www.nonprofitstaff.com) the nonprofit specialists have been retained to conduct a search for a new Senior Development Associate of Online Donor Cultivation for one of the Bay Area’s most successful and unique environmental protection agencies!

 

Our client is a nonprofit law firm for the environment, headquartered in the East Bay.  They work through the courts to safeguard public lands, national forests, parks, and wilderness areas; to reduce air and water pollution; to prevent toxic contamination; and to preserve endangered species and wildlife habitat. Founded in 1971, our clients have played a leading role in shaping the development of environmental law.

 

The Senior Development Associate for Online Donor Cultivation & Solicitation is responsible for the day-to-day management of the online program of Public Support donor communications and fundraising. This position is responsible for managing the online fundraising program for growth—in both dollars raised and overall list size—as well as managing the operational logistics of the program and serving as the primary online donor relations contact.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Planning & budgeting:

 

  • Work with the Director of Public Support, their online consultants and internal stakeholders to set realistically aggressive annual goals for online revenue and list growth.
  • Contribute to the development of the annual budget and monitor their progress against monthly revenue goals. Suggest corrective actions in cases where they project shortfalls.
  • Manage their online fundraising calendar to ensure that their online fundraising and list-building campaigns are developed and launched on schedule.
  • Take the lead on developing strategies for promoting online their suite of special giving programs.

 

Program management:

 

  • Work with the Director of Public Support and their online consultants to set and manage the overall strategy for the online fundraising program. Take the lead on developing the tactics that will allow them to achieve their strategies.
  • Coordinate all aspects of the online work with their external consultants. Serve as the primary day-to-day contact for their consultants and related vendors.
  • Coordinate list pulls and results tracking with partners on the Web team and in Data Management.  Develop mail plans which clearly articulate the list specifications, segmentation needs, and source coding requirements for each initiative.
  • Participate in joint creative briefings for their online & offline writing consultants. Take the lead on collecting topical material and providing follow-up creative briefings to their online creative consultants.
  • Ensure a high level of quality in all online communications.  Traffic all creative for review and approval by relevant parties. Ensure that the resulting comments are routed back to their online consultants and that appropriate edits are made to any materials.
  • Track and analyze program results in order to inform future initiatives. Work closely with their online consultants to ensure that they get the maximum possible analytical value from them. Work in close partnership with the Web and Data Management teams to develop and improve their systems and processes for capturing and assessing the results.
  • Coordinate the production of their monthly eNewsletter.
  • Keep their partners apprised of their messaging plans and needs.

 

Donor Relations:

 

  • Respond to—or redirect, as appropriate—incoming email and donor communications.
  • Assist the Gifts Processing and Data Management teams with questions arising from online donor transactions.
  • Provide back-up telephone coverage to the Officer and the Development Associate in times of seasonally heavy call volume.

 

Program Development:

 

  • Develop a system for archiving each online fundraising initiative and the related results and corresponding analysis.
  • Collect “lessons learned” that they will be able to pass down through the years and apply to future initiatives.
  • Participate in the annual donorCentrics Internet Giving Collaborative Benchmarking project and all associated conference calls and meetings.
  • Keep an eye on the competition.  Develop a methodology for capturing and reviewing competitive online fundraising initiatives and extracting actionable insights.
  • Contribute to the ongoing process of improving their online fundraising processes and practices. Stay abreast of developments in the field of online fundraising in order to inform their own efforts.
  • Occasional travel to conferences and meetings

 

 

The ideal candidate will have:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of related experience (non-profit preferred)
  • Strong familiarity with online fundraising and/or advocacy techniques
  • Ability to manage workflow processes and coordinate input from multiple stakeholders
  • Excellent judgment about when and how to involve stakeholders in decision-making
  • Project management skills and experience working with external consultants
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a diplomatic approach to conflict resolution
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to juggle competing priorities
  • Strong writing skills coupled with an editor’s eye for detail
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Interest in the quantitative aspects of online fundraising and a desire to learn more
  • Familiarity with and interest in environmental issues
  • Strong computer skills, including familiarity with the full suite of office productivity tools (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations) as well as database and web applications
  • Ability to lift 20-25 lbs.
