Compensation: $14.00- $17.00 per hour, depending on experience. No additional benefits associated with this position.
Employment Status: Temporary/Hourly employee
Hours: Temporary position, not to extend beyond June 1, 2010; non-exempt General working hours
are 3pm-6:30pm Monday through Friday.
Supervision: No supervisory requirements
Reports To: Youth Activities Manager, Director of Youth Services

Position Description: This position is part of the Native American Youth and Family Center Youth Services Department and is responsible for tutoring middle school students on a one-on-one basis or in a small group. NAYA tutors work closely with youth to assist them in the completion of their assigned homework and to help them improve their reading, writing and math skills. Tutors meet once or twice a week with student(s) and further develop their skills, knowledge and abilities to succeed in their educational environment. NAYA tutors need to effectively communicate with students, parents, teachers and school officials. Tutoring can occur at the students’ school, or at the Native American Youth and Family Center. The Center is equipped with an up-to-date computer lab, Internet access, and a small library. This position is primarily a direct service position with some dedicated to record keeping and general administrative tasks.
Essential Functions:
Design and implement tutoring lesson plans according to students’ academic needs. Assess students academically using the Measures of Academic Progress assessment.Tutor students one-on-one, or in small groups once or twice a week in math, reading and/or language arts.Set learning goals with the involvement of student, parent(s), and teachers. Consult with special educators to ensure students with IEP and 504 plans have appropriate targeted academic goals and are making desired progress in SES tutoringCoordinate student/tutor schedules and sessions. Monitor student attendance and participation. Call parents on the same day if student is absent or demonstrates any behavioral problemsDemonstrated ability to manage a classroomKeep student files meticulously organized and updated. Compile weekly and monthly progress reports regarding students’ tutoring sessions, behavior, and academic progress as well as their assessments.Ensure students have access to educational skills and life-skill development programming, as well as any programs or opportunities that the students demonstrate an interest in or need based on youth assessment.Refer students to the following NAYA programs, as well as support the student in an effort for the student to find success in these programs:Learning Center: One-on-one and/or small group tutoring for youth during Learning Center hours, or during after-school times as well as serve as a teaching/subject resource for tutors.Skill Based learning opportunities: Classes/workshops that develop youth skills and knowledge so that youth have higher success rates in the classroom, testing and overall academic success in schools. Youth Nights: Activities that intellectually stimulate social and leadership development of NAYA Family Center youth and encourage positive youth participation.Field Trips: Fields trips that intellectually stimulate and encourage NAYA Family Center youth participation in accordance with agency policy and procedures. Connect students with services: Identify and recommend NAYA Family Center programs or other community resources as needed and appropriate.
Advocacy: Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students’ teachers, school administrators and school partners and outside agencies.
Transportation: Assist the Youth Services Department with the coordination of transportation for students being tutored and provide transportation for youth using agency vehicles. Assist with picking up students from their schools and bringing them to the NAYA Family Center for services as well as assist with dropping students off at home after programming ends.Participate in staff trainings and attend meetings authorized and/or assigned by Youth Activities Manager.Other duties as assigned by Youth Activities Manager, Youth Services Director and/or Executive Director.
Additional Responsibilities:
NAYA Family Center is a team/community-based organization that relies heavily on all members of the team participating and supporting each other. It is a requirement of this position to work as an active member of the team.
Qualifications and Skills:
Oregon teaching certificate preferred, but not required. Bachelors degree in Education, Social Work, Math, Communications, or related field requiredExcellent verbal and written communication skills and active listening skills.
Strong computer skills including web based research, word processing, database management, email and Microsoft Office programs.Ability to work with diverse student populations, specifically the urban Native population, including knowledge of Native American history, an understanding of the diversity of the local American Indian/Alaskan Native community and issues surrounding the Urban Indian experience.
Work Environment: 70% classroom, 30% outside office including travel time.
Physical Requirements: Lifting a minimum of 30 lbs. over your head, sitting for extended periods of time.

Safety Considerations: Some travel may be required.
