About
The Arusha Project’s Abroad Program is a grass-roots effort to promote HIV/AIDS relief and gender equality in Tanzania, East Africa. We partner with 10 non-governmental organizations, palliative care centers, district hospitals and orphanages to provide agriculture, microfinance, and volunteer support. Volunteer placements include room and board, visa fees, Swahili instruction (no proficiency required), medical and evacuation insurance, local transportation, and an array of cultural excursions.

Where is Arusha? What is it like? What are the accommodations like?
* The United Republic of Tanzania is in East Africa, just south of
the equator. Arusha itself is located at the base of Mount Meru, an
inactive volcano seventy kilometers west of Mount Kilimanjaro. The
surrounding area is tropical/rain forest, densely populated with
banana, mango and acacia trees, among other flora. The country is
ethnically diverse with nearly 120 disparate tribes. The people of
Arusha are friendly and welcoming.
* The World Bank estimates Tanzania's income per capita at $290, and
its life expectancy per person at forty-three years. HIV/AIDS infects
nearly one in ten Tanzanians.
* Our lodging is located 5 minutes outside Arusha Municipality in Kwa
Idd, a semi-rural village. The home is modest but clean, inclusive of
basic amenities, though electricity and hot water can be inconsistent
throughout the area. Local cooks prepare and serve Tanzanian cuisine,
including ugali, ugi, fried plantains and avocadoes.
