About

The Arusha Project is a bi-national non-profit organization that partners with current university students, recent graduates and other socially consious individuals with community-based organizations and non-profit organizations in Tanzania, East Africa. Our mission is to educate on the issues of gender equality and sexual health with emphasis on the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

 

 

The Arusha Projects Internship program is designed as a service-learning experience in that it combines service and learning objectives in a way that is mutually beneficial for our interns and the communities they serve. Participants are challenged to work independently and in teams despite limited resources. Each of our interns is challenged to communicate across cultural and language barriers. Interns must exercise patience, flexibility, a willingness to adapt to the needs or our partners, cultural sensitivity, and a tremendous amount of humility.

 

We offer a unique experience while contributing to and learning from the community that we serve.

 

The Arusha Project Interns live and work in Arusha, Tanzania while completing 3 - 12 week long internships projects in HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention, Sustainable organizational development, international health, Microfinance, teaching and curriculum development.

 

Interns undergo pre-departure preparation and a detailed orientation in-country upon arrival in Arusha, Tanzania. Orientation and training includes Swahili language instruction, training in HIV/AIDS with emphasis on the pandemics affect in Tanzania, discussions on Tanzanian Culture, and training on Microfinance.

 

The Arusha Project Program is a fulfilling, service learning adventure for students to fulfill internship, community service or independent study requirements for university.

 

Program dates:

Winter 2008
• Dec 14 – Jan 4
• Dec 21 – Jan 11

Summer 2009
• June 21 - July 11
• July 12 - Aug 1
• Aug 2 - Aug 22
• Aug 23 - Sept 12

Programs typically last 3 weeks but can be extended

-         Work location is in Arusha, Tanzania

 

Internship Program Fee includes:

-         Shared accommodations in group living situation

-         Meals (breakfast lunch and dinner)

-         Matron services

-         Orientation to program

-         Swahili language instruction

-         Airport pick up and drop off

-         Local transportation

-         Social/Cultural excursions

-         Medical and Evacuation insurance

-         Visa fees

Not included:

-         Round trip airfare between Arusha and the US

-         Personnel expenses (telephone, gifts, etc.)

 

Program details:

-         3-12 weeks duration

-         US citizenship is not required

-         The Arusha Project is a 501c3 tax-exempt organization

-         Academic/Internship credit may be applied for through home university

-         Space is limited, apply early!
