About
Social Venture Technology Group (SVT) is a San Francisco-based advisory firm specializing
in the measurement, management and communication of social and environmental impact.
We serve corporations, small and medium sized enterprises, social enterprises, foundations, nonprofits, governmental entities, and their investors and funders. We believe that when impact is systematically articulated and managed, investment will flow to those organizations that create positive impact. Our work involves analysis, tool customization and implementation, and field-building R&D.
SVT seeks interns to assist with a variety of projects as described below. This program lasts 3 to 6 months and is open to graduate students studying related fields, and/or to individuals with at least 3 years of relevant work experience. We will approve school credit where appropriate.
Goals
SVT’s goals are to: 1) obtain practical assistance with a variety of web development, technology tool development, operations and client projects; 2) build relationships with potential employees or contributors to the field; and 3) help train individuals who are interested in social and environmental impact measurement and SROI analysis.
Our goals for the intern(s) are to: 1) gain practical knowledge in the analysis of non-financial value and social return on investment; 2) understand how low-cost technology tools can be benefit the marketplace; and 3) develop real-world experience working in an entrepreneurial business environment on web development.
Description of work
The SVT internship will involve assisting SVT in one or more of several areas including web development, database management and product development. Expertise is required in at least one of the following areas:
Web development
• Leading a website revamp project which will require web coding and design skills
• Quickly learning new web development tools as needed to enhance the user experience of the SVT website
• Incorporation of video
• Simplifying a complex story in a visually compelling way
• Other web development assistance as needed
• Social media skills and background a plus
Technology tool and product development
• Leading the spec and scope of product/“tool” development projects
• Using Visual Basic to create advanced Excel tools
• Programming and developing online tools
Database Development
• Leading project spec and scoping
• Developing the taxonomy
• Integrating data from multiple sources
• Finding the most cost-efficient solutions possible
• Design and build of a database solution
Work Environment
SVT is a small but active firm working on many groundbreaking projects with clients in many countries. We are a growing business requiring an entrepreneurial spirit from our team to keep up with both client and business development demands. We work in a diverse range of fields, from environment to health to economic development and beyond, and we expect team members to bring flexibility and a diverse set of interests to bear. We work hard but believe in a good work-life balance. Our offices are located in the Mission District of San Francisco.
Requirements
Skills and experience
• Excellent written and spoken English skills
• Passion for the intersection of social, environmental and business/investment goals
• Attention to detail
• Desktop and web-based graphic design skills a plus
One or more of the following:
• Strong knowledge of standards compliant web design: CSS & XHTML
• Knowledge of back-end programming languages such as PHP
• Working knowledge of integration with social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace
• Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
• Strong Visual Basic and/or other product development programming language skills
• Database development experience
• Experience with programming Salesforce applications
Time
This position will ideally require 40 hours per week, however the minimum commitment is 24 hours per week (3 full days). Some projects will require in-office or continuous online presence during defined workday hours, while other projects can be done nights and weekends as determined by the intern. The internship is for a period of 3 to 6 months. We will look for interns who can start as soon as possible (specific dates are flexible).
Equipment
Interns must have their own reliable, internet-accessible computers with Skype or Skype-compatible functionality. Interns will be required to work from SVT’s office during defined time periods, however will be able to work remotely on certain days as long as internet is available. Please note that SVT cannot supply home internet access. Cell/telephone accessibility is a plus but not required; having it will support greater flexibility for the intern to work from home or other locations if desired.
Compensation
This is an unpaid internship position. We will strive to optimize recognition and networking opportunities, and approve school credit where appropriate.
Expectations
SVT does not guarantee any employment after the conclusion of the internship. Any offers of ongoing contract work or employment will be based on actual staffing needs and whether
the individual is a match with those needs, and will be evaluated by SVT at the conclusion of
the internship. SVT expects interns to uphold their commitment to the 3- 6- month internship, barring major unforeseen obstacles. Upon successful completion of the internship and the delivery of high-quality work, a letter of recommendation will be written on behalf of the intern.
