Earth Island Institute, a San Francisco-based 501(c)(3) public interest organization that supports activist initiatives for a sustainable world, seeks a part-time staff member to work directly with 30 staff members on their needs using desktop and laptop computers. 
The Desktop Support Specialist will be responsible for the following tasks:
* Setting up and maintaining computers to serve employees with various software as well as Internet connectivity as well as access to appropriate in-house fileserver storage, using Mac or PC computers as determined by job requirements
* Maintaining virus protection software on computers
* Maintaining installations of up-to-date versions for the following software, as needed for each employee:
•    Operating Systems (XL for PC, 10.4.x plus for Mac)
•    Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel. PowerPoint)
•    Appropriate Internet Browsers (Safari, Firefox for Mac: IE for PC, Firefox for PC)
•    E-mail client programs (Eudora, Entourage, Mail for Mac; Outlook for PC)
•    Parallels software for Intel Mac users using XP programs
•    Blackbaud Raiser's Edge constituent management software
•    Microsoft Solomon accounting software
•    Adobe Creative Suite 2 publishing software
•    PDA/Smartphone synchronization software (Palm Desktop, Entourage, Contacts on Mac; Outlook on PC)
•    Other specialty software as needed by users; experience with specialty software (Raiser's Edge, Solomon, etc.) is a plus.

* Coordinating purchasing of software from TechSoup and other sources
* Maintaining backup systems appropriate to each user
* Maintaining e-mail accounts through HostMySite.com
* Training staff for effective use of hardware and software
* Troubleshooting user problems (e-mail, Office, Internet access, etc.)
* Working in coordination with Computer Consultant who maintains servers, wiring, and network systems
