Position: Staff Assistant

The Worker Rights Consortium (WRC) has an opening for a Staff Assistant in its Washington, DC office. This is an administrative position that also involves research and coordination of electronic communications. The WRC is a non-profit research and advocacy organization dedicated to ending sweatshop conditions and protecting the rights of workers in factories across the globe that produce goods for the U.S. market. The WRC is based in Washington, DC and has staff in ten countries.
Responsibilities
The Staff Assistant has the following areas of responsibility, with each area representing the indicated percentage of the position’s total workload:
40% Administrative support: greeting visitors and handling incoming phone calls; preparing materials for meetings; proofing, printing and mailing correspondence; maintaining files; office management (ordering supplies, communicating with building manager); copying and faxing; assisting in communications with overseas staff; other administrative tasks as assigned.
25% Research: Internet research related to the organization’s labor rights investigations and policy work; reading and summarizing reports and articles; identifying and circulating relevant news reports; some quantitative analysis.
20% Document preparation/electronic communications: Proofing, formatting and polishing a variety of electronic documents for publication and circulation; organizing electronic mass mailings; managing contact databases.
5% Database management: Data entry, troubleshooting, interfacing with outside web hosting company – all related to the organization’s global factory database.
5% Web: Website maintenance and posting content as requested.
5% Technical support: Assisting staff with computer issues, interfacing with outside tech support firm.
Qualifications
Education: A BA/BS or foreign equivalent is required.
Experience: Candidates must have at least one year of experience in a professional office environment.
Personal Qualities: Candidates must be mature, conscientious, reliable, energetic, flexible, personable, discreet, and supportive of the cause of worker rights.
Skills: Candidates must possess all of the following:
· Excellent organization skills and attention to detail (candidates who are not well organized should not apply for this position), strong verbal and written communications skills.
· A high level of skill and substantial experience with use of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Adobe Acrobat, and the ability to learn other software quickly. General computer savvy.
· Experience proofing and formatting electronic and printed documents for publication.
· Good internet research skills.
The following are also useful for this position, but are not required: Fluency in spoken and written Spanish and the ability to do basic translation work, and/or other foreign language fluency; experience with corporate research; knowledge of international labor rights issues; experience with electronic mass mailing software; basic HTML skills; familiarity with office computer networks.
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $34,000 - $40,000, depending on experience. The WRC offers an excellent benefits package, including five weeks paid vacation, employer-paid family health coverage with additional flexible spending plan, and retirement benefits. The Staff Assistant is also a member of the WRC’s staff union and enjoys the benefits and protections of a union contract.
