The Sarvodaya Shramadana Sangamaya movement of Sri Lanka offers one working model of Sustainability for the West. Rooted in a redefinition of "development" as the process of waking up, every single participant in the movement - Sri Lanka's largest NGO - is engaged as a powerful contributor shaping the movement by their own work.

Joanna Macy's life and work have been wonderfully inspired by the contributions and awakening she experienced during her years with this group. She celebrates the foundational cornerstones of Sarvodaya's "everybody wakes up" philosophy in her book World As Lover, World As Self.
