Areas of Focus
About
The Green Century Institute is a non-profit organization that advocates for and conducts consulting and research on large-scale sustainable development. The organization has three primary areas of activity:
Califia - San Francisco Bay Area Ecocity Project
Califia is a proposed revolutionary urban settlement for 7000-10,000 residents that will showcase and test sustainable architectural designs and technologies, and new community models. Califia will be established within a 30 mile radius of San Francisco over a 10 year period. GCI is working with pioneers in large scale eco-city design to produce a comprehensive proposal for the project to share with potential stakeholders from the Bay Area, the commercial development sphere, civic and federal agencies, and the sustainable funding community.
Califia Sketchbook Design Competition
The purpose of developing the Califia Sketchbook Design
Competition is to express to a wide variety of people what life will be
like in Califia, a proposed next generation eco-city. People from
around the world are invited to enter a conceptual sketch conveying
their view of "slices-of-life" within Califia, revealing smarter ways
of building, powering, and maintaining the urban fabric. We believe
that allowing for more direct public involvement in the design of
future living spaces is the first step in a successful eco-city
project. A design competition is an elegant way to allow for such
public involvement.
Events and Media Development
The Green Century
Institute produces the GCI Salon Series and Special Events on topics
relevant to the Sustainable Community movement. With strong ties to the
San Francisco Bay Area technology community as well as the film and
book publishing industries, GCI is developing media properties based on
its events and research initiatives.
