About Our Music Preservation Program
Mission & Objectives
Global Music Project's mission is to unite humanity through the power of music.
Our mission will be accomplished through the realization of the following objectives:
* Record music and video footage from developing cultures throughout the world.
* Promote, market, and distribute these recordings globally.
* Continue to expand our internet community and global web presence, so we can reach artists who wish to showcase their work and connect them to a global audience.
Social Change
Art is not a vaccine. It does not cure disease, feed the hungry, or clean toxic water supplies. And yet, it is vital to human existence, often unnoticed, like breath. Global Music Project operates on the premise that art expresses a culture’s identity, informed by the past and envisioning new futures. Art speaks to the populace and influences popular belief; it unites polarized sectors.
Music is the auditory pulse of a society. Beyond entertainment, it is the soundtrack for the current culture, a mouthpiece for change, and a bridge across differences. We, as a society, have begun to recognize that we belong to a global community, and that what happens to the price of rice in China really does affect the Midwestern farmer. An instantaneous equalizer, music offers shared celebration, mourning, and peace.
When a piece of music that would have been lost is preserved, such as the North American folk music recordings on the Smithsonian Institute’s Folkways label, the voice of that culture informs our current one. We are wiser for the contribution, grounded in our heritage. When the folk songs are heard by other cultures, the humanity expressed in this music resonates in their experience.
Global Music Project intends to continue to promote cross-cultural appreciation and understanding through the preservation of music. We will identify musical expressions throughout the world that are in danger of extinction and record them. Special attention will go into the marketing and packaging of this music, including exceptional sound quality, informative text, and breathtaking imagery. As we introduce the never-heard-before music of these cultures, we will affect not only how people see these cultures, but how they see themselves; as people identify with the human element of the music, an increased sense of global responsibility is inevitable.
Expansion
Through funding from sources such as our corporate sponsors, donations, and grants, select cultures throughout the world will be recorded and preserved, allowing others to discover and enjoy them in other parts of the globe. As the public’s awareness of Global Music Project and its mission spreads, so will the awareness of the cultures it so carefully preserves.
As Global Music Project grows, it will record and preserve the music and cultures of more and more peoples. Additionally, its distribution will grow along with the awareness of its mission and the cultures it promotes. The music will be released on its own boutique record label, and the video footage will be released as a cable television series, likely to be aired on PBS or Discovery Channel.
Design & Implementation (The 3-Year Plan)
Global Music Project’s music preservation program consists of the following: Investigate which countries’ cultures in the world are most in need of preservation; build our audio and video travel team; travel to said countries, and produce products (audio recordings and television shows) for mass public consumption.
Year One for Global Music Project will consist of researching cultures in danger of extinction, consulting with musicologists and television producers, and developing the team of audio and video professionals. We will travel to the identified communities and capture their musical expression via audio and video recordings.
During Year Two, the first recordings will be marketed and distributed to the public. Simultaneously, we will expand our efforts, recording audio and video material of more diverse cultures.
Year Three will focus on further expanding the distribution of these recordings and increasing recording efforts.
"George Harrison did it in 1969 for Bangladesh, Bob Geldof did it in the 80’s with Live Aid, and I believe we can cause a great change in this decade. Never underestimate the power of music or that of the human conscience.” – Peter Fosso
