Feeding Ourselves Sustainably
The principle of sustainability requires that we meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. And yet, today’s agricultural practices are depleting topsoil, contaminating groundwater, increasing costs of production – not to mention having an adverse social impact on families and communities. Learning centers working with the Berkana Exchange recognize the detrimental effects of the modern mindset around food production and distribution. They are exploring the leadership practices our communities need to maintain a sustainable food supply.
Practices within the scope of Feeding Ourselves Sustainably include various forms of permaculture and natural farming, rainwater harvesting, vertical and rooftop agriculture and solar ovens. Many learning centers believe that waste equals food – they are experimenting with several types of composting and dry toilets. They are developing training and demonstration centers where local community members and other organizations might meet to learn these practices and share their own innovations. Learning centers are hosting conversations around the choices we make as consumers of food. Members of this community of practice are finding that they rely on a blending of the knowledge of their elders and the creativity of the younger generation.
South Africa FOS Learning Journey harvest is now available in Learning Resources department in FOS Learning Journey in SA folder.
