My Vision of Peace By Admiral (ret.) Ami Ayalon Thank you very much for joining me. I want to start by saying something about myself, not to describe what I did in the Israeli Navy which, I think, is irrelevant but I want to mention the fact that my parents came to Israel in the 1930’s. My father was an illegal immigrant and my mother came as a child to study in Jerusalem. Together, they helped to create a Kibbutz in the Jordan valley. My father retired several years ago at the age of eighty, for the last ten years he was the carpenter on the Kibbutz. |

| I just came across this article in Mondoweiss http://mondoweiss.net/2010/06/what-about-the-turkish-charitys-alleged-links-to-terrorists.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+feedburner%2FWDBc+(Mondoweiss). If thsi source is to be believed then there is a lot of misinformation around. Yes showcasing the positive actions IS CRITICAL. In Australia there seems to be such ambivalence on taking real steps to achieve peace.... Celeste Salter about 1 month ago

| I just watched the courageous video of Mr. Awad talking about how Palestinians have the responsibility to understand that Jews are still traumatized by the holocaust and are afraid, and that the fear is used against all of us. It seems to me that this point is a big step towards peace, but isn’t very accurate. Jewish Israelis from European backgrounds are much more likely to favor withdrawal from occupied territories than Jewish Israelis whose relatives came from Arab nations, amongst whom racism against Arabs is much stronger. I know that there are many Palestinians who accept Israel, perhaps even welcome Israel, and simply want an end to the violence and oppression. What I haven’t yet seen on this forum or even in the goodness of Mr. Awad is a recognition that the trauma of the Holocaust isn’t what drives Jewish defensiveness. It is the trauma of decades of our existence being threatened in consistent violent attacks by Palestinians, Jordanians, Syrians, Egyptians and now Lebanese, and that the leaders of both major Palestinian parties (Hamas and Fatah) are committed to our destruction. The fear and defensiveness stems mostly from that, not from what happened in Europe – Europe only reminds us that it can happen, but that we must make sure that it doesn’t. If Arabs, as a majority, had peacefully accepted us in any decade in the past ¾ century, the situation on the ground would be much different. The ultra-conservative, religious settlers in the Occupied Territories would not have the excuse that we need to be there for our security. But, unfortunately, that excuse is based in reality. We are still under threat of genocide, and this is the root of the problem, according to most Jews in Israel. Shachar Erez about 1 month ago

| I am eager for the day when people of both sides of this war will see that we are one - all children of God. We can have seperate homes where each can express his/her people's ways and be free and sovereign, but to accept and receive each other. To celebrate the goodness in each other and encouraging that goodness to be active instead of trying to control each other. Shachar Erez about 1 month ago
