Burma has been ruled by a military dictatorship since 1962. Under the mismanagement and corruption of the military dictatorship, Burma, once the richest country in the region, now ranks as one of the poorest countries in the world. The Burmese people continue to suffer under one of the most repressive and brutal regimes in the world today and have endured forced labor, rape, torture, and the regime's refusal to honor the results of the 1990 general election.
