About

Big
SurPowerdown is our community cooperating and communicating to address diminishing natural resources and climate change by applying strategies forrelocalizing our resources, reducing fossil fuel dependency
and having fun while doing it.

Our intent with Big Sur Powerdown is to educate the populace of Big Sur and ourselves about the long-term problems and solutions facing our unique community and the ones surrounding it due to future energy constraint.

In the first year of our coming together we have connected many dots and started to build more intentions within our community.

Our community meetings are fun! We have one a month and offer demonstrations from tree grafting to  olive oil candle making. Our goal is to have each person who shows up for a meeting walk away with something that empowers them.

We have joined the Grange in Big Sur and are a driving force in the revitalization of the Grange. The Grange was a dark and moldy place for years and membership had dropped way off to only 5 people! Now we have membership up to about 20 people who are showing up to the monthly meetings and to our work days! We have trimmed the Redwood trees opening them up and the hall itself to the sunshine. Then a team of community scoured the inside of the hall removing 50 years of junk that had collected. Next, we paint the inside and replace all the chairs. Its an on-going project which will include a total remodel of the kitchen and bathrooms. Powerdown uses this hall for our meetings and movie nights. It is our only community center, so we are very pleased to be a part of this change. We also donated $1,000 towards this project of revitalization.

We held three community picnics this summer at the State Park in Big Sur. These events were family oriented and a lot of fun!

We had our first festival on October 14th 2007 at the Big Sur Spirit Gardens Highway One.

“Localize It!" Festival and community celebration.

Theme:  Uniting the greater Big Sur Community through celebration, education and cooperation.

We are now under the umbrella of the Post Carbon Institute for a 501.c3 so we can accept tax free donations. Wallace Global has been our angel by gifting us with our first grant this year!

As a group we have been invited to help maintain the future recycling center which is breaking ground in 2008. This is an important breakthrough for our community, as the county removed our recycle center 15 years ago! So, we are taking a leadership role in managing the center. This is a big commitment on the part of our group! We are methodically proving that we are committed to our vision of community building, through these types of pursuits.

We have a steering committee that consists of a fun group of local community members working for change.  We meet monthly and email sometimes daily. We are the core of our group. Our hope for the future is to enroll a more people who want to join us on the steering committee.
