Hi -- We're using the Chatterbox function in a group I'm managing - A Network of Network Funders. But the "chatter" text is getting cut off on the right side, and I can't seem to manipulate the box to in order to view it all. Can you give me some guidance on how to fit the format?

Thanks!

Hi Diana,

I just tested the chatterbox module in all possible position and layout (halves/thirds, top/bottom/left/right) using Firefox 3.5 in WinXP and found no text was getting cut off on the right side. Can you post a screenshot here?... and also share your browser information? (including version number and operating system)

To change the height (and thus the number of chatters displayed), use the "Edit setting" link on the pencil icon menu. The options are small/medium/large. You need to be a group admin to be able to do this.

To see a list of all previous chatters, click on "Show history" on the pencil icon menu of the chatterbox module.

Let us know if you have any further/other question or need any help.

Thanks for stopping by,

Bowo

Hi Bowo --

It looks like it is a browser issue. When I use Firefox, the format is fine. But when I use IE (with Windows OS) the text gets cut off. This is the same problem that others in the group are having - and I'm sure the folks who reported the problem are also using.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi Diana,

Ooh, unfortunately, there's not too much we can do with IE at times.  We try our best to make our site as compatible with it as possible, but IE doesn't comply to generally accepted web standards.  So it does render things differently, and causes problems like what you're seeing above.  The best we can generally do is to steer people toward using Firefox, or perhaps the newest IE 8 (though even that one isn't fully web standards compliant).  But we do understand that people at office environments don't always have the luxury of switching browser, so I will note down your issue as a bug to be addressed, and have one of our developers eventually take a look at it.  Though, please bear in mind that we have a full plate of projects and some pressing deadlines set for our developers this year, so it may be awhile before we can "fix" this problem.

Kind regards -

Honore

Thanks so much! Completely understand the constraints -- we're dealing with a similar IE issue with formatting for our own (internal) website / blog!

Hi all,

I experience the same problem that Diane describes above on two group pages I just started. See an example of the chatter box here, which I created for demonstration purposes. I am using Seamonkey 1.1.18. The problem occurred when a user copied a link into the chatterbox, which was longer than the space available in the window. Now all the lines of the chatterbox are extended to match the length of the link and disappear to the right of the window. There is no horizontal scrollbar or some other possibility to make the hidden part of the lines visible. And the chatterbox tool seems not to allow a line wrap of the uninterrupted "word" as which the link appears.

Any workaround or solution available to this problem.

How could I delete the long line with the link, for example?

Best regards,

Martin

Hi,

This is for your information. I switched to Mozilla Seamonkey 2.0, based on the Mozilla platform that also powers Firefox 3.5. Seamonkey 2.0 is able of line wrapping within links and thus the problem I had previously with viewing the chatter box has disappeared from my screen.

Hi Martin,

Good to know that the upgrade solved your problem. For long URLs, you might want to try a URL-shortener service like http://bit.ly, which will also allow you to track how many people click on that link.

For example, this discussion thread originally use this URL:

http://www.wiserearth.org/forum/view/fb64d4dac791796556f52cf27642be88

Feed that to bit.ly, and you'll get:

http://bit.ly/3252fR

You can view the click statistics at:

http://bit.ly/info/3252fR

Thanks again for reporting (and resolving!) your issue.

Regards,

Bowo
