Hey, all:

I, too, have been MIA, out on a job to prepare for a prescribed burn. Many hours on a tractor and many others on my hands and knees, etc., surveying the soils and biota.

I see "EarthCharter" has not been changed, and speaking of MIA, it looks like Alan AtKisson is also, having not been active in the Earth Charter group in 3 months. It also appears he is the only empowered member. Lisa, have you been able to contact him, as Bowo suggested? If he has not responded, it looks like 2 things should be done. One, Honore, can someone step in and add an adiministrator to this group to restore some activity/continuity? And two, it seems a lesson for all groups is that there needs to be 2+ administrators/editors for every group from the start-up, which should be stated in the Group FAQs page and other sources. Regarding the various factors at play here--privileges, computers, browsers, privacy settings, (are there more?), it seems the above is necessary.

Hey, Michael: Yes, I agree, a setting which allows anyone to modify name/ content of a group would be ideal in an ideal world, and we must continue to dream; however, realistically, a means of restricting such actions is a, ahem, Wise move....

Thanks Bowo - you are spot-on with your answer. Lisa, only group administrators have the ability to change the name of a group - but they can confer admin privileges to any member. It is up to their discretion, so I would msg your group admin and ask him/her to either change the name or grant you the ability to do so.

Oh, and two more things Lisa, If you haven't already:

1. don't forget to at least read the "Groups FAQ" page @ http://www.wiserearth.org/article/GroupsFAQ
2. also read the "Group Admin Tutorial" at least once @ http://www.wiserearth.org/article/f2c73759b4f4f9d1c21e758ee711201e

Have a wonderful day,

Hi Lisa,

I think I've understood the problem. You can not change the name of the group because you're "Privileges" is only a "member" (you can see this by hovering your mouse over your avatar/picture in the group's "Home" tab) and the group's setting is "Semi-Private" (you can see this in the upper-right part of the group's page).

Here are the solutions:
1. You can ask Mr. Atkisson (who has the "administrator" privilege) to make you an "administrator" so you can edit the "Group Info" section.
2. You can ask Mr. Atkisson himself to change the "Group Info" section.
3. You can ask Mr. Atkisson to change the group's privacy setting from "Semi-Private" to "Public" so that any "member" of the group can change the "Group Info" section.

The easiest one would be No.2, and the least desirable one would be No.3 because anyone can mess with the group's sensitive info.

Hope this solve your problem Lisa.
Drop in with any questions or problems any time ;-)

Peace too,
Bowo

Hi guys,

Once again thank you for your replies. I think it seems I/we may be the first ones to have brought this question up (yes?), becuase I am sorry to say but it is NOT possible to change the name of a group (at least not on Mac/Firefox...). Have followed your instructions very carefully but it is just not possible to edit the name itself.

Have you tried it yourselves and been able to??!

The reason why I was inquiring about this was that we wanted to change the name from EarthCharter to Earth Charter International or at least Earth Charter (in two separate words).

It is not a big deal and we should not spend anymore time on this - nor you nor me;-) - but thank you very much for your efforts and long replies.

Peace,
lisa

Wellcome back Mike, it has been a bit quiet without you lately :)

Yep, I agree with you that the ability of a group member to edit the "Group Info" section is excessive.
Sm_avatar
Hi David and Bowo, thx for being so helpful! I was sick this past week so I've been MIA for a while...but fine now. You guys are right on in your responses.

In response to David's comment: "For some groups you do not have to even BE a MEMBER to see the "Edit" link, but for some, what I said initially is true--only editors/administrators. Part of it seems to be connected to the "Privacy" setting in the grey box upper right--"Public", "Semi-private", etc. "
--This is true...but I sense that you feel this is a bit awkward. This is good feedback for a future revision of the privacy settings. I think that being able to change the name of a public group is excessive as well. If I was the member of a public group one day and then learned that a new members suddenly joined and changed it to something embarrassing or against my beliefs I might be a little ticked.

Whoops, guess you clicked the "Save" button faster David :)

I'll check your lead on the Privacy settings causing the appearance/disappearance of the "Edit" link on the "Group Info" section.

Hi again Lisa,

Can I clarify something... what do you want to do?

To change the name of the group of which you're an administrator.... or to edit "My Groups" section (to achieve what?) ?

As far as I know, the "My Groups" link is the one on the top-right corner of any page (once you've logged in to WiserEarth), and on the My Groups section of a user's personal profile page. Both function as a link to a page listing the latest activity in the groups that you've joined. This link, or the page it linked to can not be edited in any way by a regular WiserEarth user (like yourself) or editor (like me and David).

By the way, what is the name of the group you are referring to in this discussion?

And, what browser are you using? (internet explorer, safari, opera, firefox...) Which version? on what operating system? (windows, mac, linux...).

Currently, WiserEarth is only optimized for Firefox (and it's derivatives like Flock 1.0 or Netscape Navigator 9). And occasionally, if you use browser other than Firefox, you will experience glitches and errors in using the site.

Summing up, from what I know, the group you are referring to should be EarthCharter. And you misinterpreted our leads here by trying to edit the group's name from your personal profile's "My Groups" section.

If you want to change the name of that group, you should first go to the group's homepage by clicking on the group's name in the "My Groups" section of your "My Profile" page. You can then follow our pointers by clicking the "About" tab on the group's page, and click "Edit" on the "Group Info" section in the "About" page. You will see a field on "Group Name" where "EarthCharter" will be in there. You can then freely change the name.

Don't hesitate to ask further if you need any help Lisa :)

Best wishes,
Bowo

Hey, all:

Wow, this is kinda mixed up! Bowo, when you first replied, I looked at a couple of groups and found what I thought was the situation--that you had to be an editor/administrator. Now I check again, and I see it varies a lot between groups. For some groups you do not have to even BE a MEMBER to see the "Edit" link, but for some, what I said initially is true--only editors/administrators. Part of it seems to be connected to the "Privacy" setting in the grey box upper right--"Public", "Semi-private", etc. I would invite you to check a variety of groups and see if the same situation develops, that there is a variety of privileges involved.

Lisa, it sounds like you are asking about 2 things here. The "My Groups" link does 2 things: if I click on the link, I get an activity listing for the groups, but if I hover over the link, the scroll down list of the groups I am part of appears, and I can choose a group to go to. (I suddenly feel it necessary to say 'when I do it', with the disclaimer in mind, " YOUR results may vary."!) The actual listing of groups changes only when you (uuhh, "I") join or leave a group, so no editing goes on there.

Lisa, you might try getting into groups from more than one way; e.g., from the links on the left, a search, and the "My Groups" link, and see if that makes a difference. Finally, are you able to edit the group you asked about?

Bowo, what you originally said does work, but it seems to have some conditions attached. Check some other groups and see what you find. Maybe Adam or Honore can clarify this murky situation.

Hey David and Bowo,

Thank you both for your replies. I am the adminstrator of the group in question and do indeed see the "Edit" link but even so it is not possible for me to edit "My Groups" section (all I get is the active link to the group...)

Please let me know what I am missing or doing wrong if I should be able to edit this information as you point out. Thank you very much in advance.

Peace,
Lisa

Hey David,

I'm not quite sure about the necessity of being an editor or administrator of a group in order to have the ability to change the name of the group.

I tried this with the Greenwashed group of which I'm only a member. Clicking on the "About" tab allow me see the "Edit" link and consequently to edit the "Group Info" section.

Is this because I'm an Editor of WiserEarth? or is it just possible for a user with group "member" status to do so?
Sm_avatar
Hey, all:

Hey, Bowo: However, this will only work if you are either an editor or administrator of the group in question. Members of the particular group will not see "Edit" on the upper bar of the Group Info section. So, Lisa, if you are not one of those, either request the name change be done by an editor or administrator, or ask for that status in order to make the change.

The steps are correct; it is the shoes that make the difference.

Hi Lisa,

You can indeed change the name of a group.

Just go to the "About" tab of the group's page, and click "edit" on the "Group Info" section. You should be able to change the name of the group. However, you can not change the URL of the group.
