There is a NW Heifer office and we are not sure how to use this tool best.  Should we create a group or an organization?  We started a group here:

Here is a group we are creating:

But this already existed:

Hey Erik,

Understandably so - more than a few members have asked about the difference between a group and an organization.

The best way to explain is that an organization page, at the moment, is just like a listing in the Yellow Pages directory.  It's pretty static and purely for information.

A group, however, is for you to pull in community members and provide them a space to interact and contribute to your work.  It doesn't have to represent Heifer the organization - it can just be an informal gathering spot for people interested in your work.  It's a much more lively place where you can talk about your projects, customize the layout however you choose, and make documents either private or public depending on your group settings.

If you don't have the need or time to administer a group, then just adding information to your organization page is perfectly fine.  Let me know if this clarifies things a little.

This makes sense.  So, I suppose it would be common to have both and they would link to each other.

Yes, most of the confusion comes when people who work at an organization arrive on WiserEarth and want to edit their organization's information.  Quite naturally, they create a profile that represents their organization, rather than themselves as an individual  One of the ways we're exploring into decreasing this confusion is to have different homepages depending on if you're here to represent an organization or as an individual.  "Landing sites", as they're called in the web world.

In any case, I'm glad you asked that question.  Reminds me of the little things we still need to take care of first.  :)
