Charles,

Have you done a soil test lately?... if not, you might throw same of the macro-nutrients out of balance by over fertilizing. That said, working compost and manure into you bed before winter, and planting a green manure crop like oats that breaks down easily is always helpful, as is covering the beds with a layer of straw over the winter to retain fertility.

Steve Solomon's book gardening when it counts if full of good ideas about maintaining and upgrading the fertility of garden beds, and since you seem to live in Maryland, you can also check with the Extension's Garden Center in Ellicott City for more locally-recommended ideas.

Ciao,

jp

Howdy,

Could anyone recommend some good tips to replenish soil nutrient loss in a garden bed for the fall and winter months? I feel like my bed could use a nutrient boost this fall, but I don't want to do anything to jeapordize the long term health of the soil. Thanks!!!
