Just ran across Bryan Dougherty and his Mending Elmira project. That seems a lot like Local Organizing and the Planetary Mind and Community Investment Enterprises. This topic is to explore how we might collaborate.

Hey David, I look forward to collaborating with you and other interested parties on how we can develop working solutions for real-life problems..
For those who may be unaware, The Mending the Elmira Syndrome Endeavor is a collaborative project to revitalize our local communities by recommending solutions that restore the harmony and economic stability to the regions we live. This project focuses on the ailments of Elmira, New York. However, individuals from any community, world-wide, will be able to recognize and institute the successful measures that this project brings forth. Utilizing a broad range of leaders, citizens, groups and organizations, we will provide solid information about local circumstances, opportunities and aspirations. The sharing of opinions and ideas will help seed the fruit of real life progress in all of our diverse communities. |

Local Organizing and the Planetary Mind is more fully explained at:
http://www.aboutus.org/3DN_Local_Organizing_and_the_Planetary_Mind The Mending Elmira Syndrome Endeavor is more fully explained at: http://www.aboutus.org/Category:NetworkWeaver:MESE_-_Mending_the_Elmira_Syndrome_Endeavor The idea is to create bridges across interest and expertise, within that locality in which everyone shares a common interest in a healthy local ecosystem and a healthy local economy, for the purpose of implementing sustainable systems of production. As each locality implements successful new systems those designs should be made available to all other localities. I am working with one group that is interested in complementary currencies: http://www.redimoney.org/ Another group that is interested in starting a Balle Chapter: http://www.sconnect.org/ Another group that wants to host the conversation: "What can we do to make our community a better place to live: http://www.votelink.com/ and a 4th group that is interested in developing open source software as tools for community organizing: http://www.sourcetreecommons.org/ The problem is that none of these groups realizes that they are all working on the same problem. My goal is to find a way to have them each look up from their own work to see how the success of these other project would facilitate their own project - and then get more and more existing organizations involved in the conversation. I explained it in more detail at: http://www.aboutus.org/3DN_existing_organizations I would like this discussion to record the results of these efforts - to identify what works in Denver and in Elmira - to develop best practices and a template for action in other communities. This is also related to the Social Network Analysis discussion where we can see what works for Daniel Bassill and his Tutor/Mentor connection in Chicago. That is my desire for this forum topic - please share what you would like to accomplish. |

Because Wiser Earth does not support live links here, I reposted the preceding comment at AboutUs with the live links. If you open
http://www.aboutus.org/3DN_Discussions in a separate browser window it will be easier to check out each of the sites. Wiser Earth does allow links in "Articles" so that would be another option for a collaborative work space. At AboutUs I start all new pages with 3DN for Three Dimensional Networking to avoid conflict with any other page name. Wiser Earth uses a number system so conflict is not an issue - However, if we started all related articles with WSD (as opposed to WMD :) then we could find them all together in the list of articles. Just some thoughts assuming that we want to go forward with the work in this forum. |

I have also reposted many of the 3DN on E.T.I., you can find them at:

I just want to let you both know that 'live links' or hyperlinks are something we will be working on in the future. I am sure it will make these types of discussions much easier to navigate. In the meantime, the good ol' copy and paste is the way people can get to the sites and discussions you mention here.
Another item that is currently being worked on by the WiserEarth tech team is a groups feature. That may be another place for you to interact. Hope this is helpful, Sarah |

Thanks Sarah - that's good to know - will look forward to increasing participation on Wiser Earth.

I'm new to this forum. I recently read Charles Mann's "1491" as well as "Blessed Unrest," and they have significantly changed my way of thinking and given me some hope.
From a biological perspective, it might be useful to ask ourselves what kind of species we want to be. We were once a keystone species, actually improving habitat for other species. Then we became an agricultural plague species, destroying habitat of other species. Next we became a technological plague species, accelerating the destruction to an insane rate. We have the potential to become a technological keystone species, one that can restore much of what we've destroyed. |

Mighk,
I very much like your concept of becoming a technological keystone species. I am promoting a local conversation around the question "What can We do to make Our community a better place to live?" as a prerequisite to implementing production systems in that category. I would be pleased if you joined me at: http://www.ned.com/group/networkweavers/ and would value your opinion of my work at: http://www.aboutus.org/3DN_Introduction Thanks for your interest, David. |
