From the International Institute of Restorative Practices: From Hostility to Harmony Output A group of teenage girls in Albany, New York, had recently fought each other in a violent brawl. The IIRP videotaped a facilitated restorative circle involving the girls (friends since childhood), their family members and supporters. This short film telescopes the remarkable transformation that takes place as all individuals in the circle are given a chance to freely express their feelings about what happened between them. Before the circle process begins, the room is heavy with belligerence and anger. By the time the circle ends, the mood has changed to hopefulness and affection, and the participants have moved From Hostility to Harmony. |

Below: How the use of restorative practices is bringing about positive behavioral change among youths at Community Service Foundation's Buxmont Academy in Bethlehem, Pa, and neighboring Palisades High School. Offender rates at the alternative school have decreased by more than half; detentions and discipline referrals have dropped since restorative practices were initiated at the public school; and there has been an increase in student self-esteem and social values. The emerging social science, based on the idea of building relationships by fostering communication and trust, leads to students, teachers and staff working together to create a community of responsibility and accountability.
