Hello,

This is Jane in Vancouver Canada. There's something I've been thinking about since I joined this group a little while ago and I haven't known how to say it. But this thread on service is starting to make it feel clearer to me.

This huge website WiserEarth seems to be peopled with amazing humans, people who are active, intelligent, conscious. It is quite inspiring. But it can also be overwhelming and intimidating. What can I contribute to this? What can I do in my little life? I don't think I'm going to give up everything and take up a life of service in Africa. I don't think I'll be putting my life savings into starting schools at the garbage dump. Those stories are inspiring but make my life and my contribution feel small.

This is the understanding I am starting to gain. My teacher said to me, "There are no more little lives." Oneness means that wherever we are and whatever we do, we can contribute to this world awakening. It is not a question of doing, but of being.

What I do is I write stories and poems. I make things up and I write about my life. I grow herbs and make medicines for my family and friends. I take care of my family. I don't think they'll be sending around the tv cameras from CNN. But my life and yours are part of this awakening. I pray. I try to be conscious. I breath the name of God. I try to trust that whatever is meant to be, will be. And whatever is, was meant to be. In and out, every day, every moment (on a good day). And that is what I understand as service. Thank you.

Hello from Marin County, California Jane. Yes you're right, and that's a wonderful reminder. If there is going to be a genuine transformation, it has to touch the heart. For some that seems to be the great works they are doing, for others maybe they may touch someone by the way they relate, and it will unfold somewhere down the line - maybe it wouldn't even look like service oriented work, but I guess it's the orientation that counts in the end.

I'm glad you pointed this out, because I know I for one would like to hear all the little ways that people are making a difference. Maybe sometimes it won't translate into words after the moment has passed, and maybe it would just be something very small - but the effect in this case isn't the direct action, but the way we touch each others hearts. As long as we hold that awareness, we remind each other of what's really important, whatever we do to relate and move through the world. So thank you for this.

I second mark's thanks Jane, it is always good to be reminded of the importance of NOW ; here today, and not get too wrapped up with future plans...

It is also good to be inspired by others great work though... Mark have you heard about the work of Greg Mortenson?  The book :

Or just google Three Cups of Tea... Seems to tie into with some of those great articles you posted.  Sometimes people are pursuing something unrelated in life... and screw-up/ encounter difficulty and get reminded of what really matters... That great Lance Armstrong book: Its Not About the Bike ties into this as well...

Peace
