THANKS for starting the process to take back batteries on a large scale in King County.
One Local battery recycler:
PND Corporation 14320 NE 21st St. #6 Bellevue, WA Tel: (425)562-7252
PND currently recycles batteries dropped off at their facility. They are one block West of Sears and Fred Meyers in Overlake neighborhood of Bellevue.
The person who answered their phone at PND said they will recycle up to 5 pounds of alkaline batteries. Free when dropped off by household consumers. Additional pounds can be recycled for $.85/lb.
I am not connected with PND other than having talked with one gentleman on the phone. Please talk with PND management for details. PND also accepts lead-acid batteries for recycling.
I noted that the University of Washington accepts techno-trash for recycling:
alkaline batteries old cell phones old computer disks

There is one silver recycling bin I saw walking through the UW Husky Union Building (HUB). I don't know who organizes this UW battery recycling project. (Maybe you?)
Some hardware stores also collect batteries for recycling.
