Here's the word from Edwards (no)
Dear Mr. Bell, On behalf of Senator Edwards, we'd like to thank you for your interest and invitation for the Senator. We appreciate the offer you have graciously extended to us, but unfortunately due to scheduling conflicts, we will be unable to join you on November 3rd, 2007 to speak at the Step it Up event in Iowa City, Iowa. We do plan on looking for a Step it Up event in other cities around the senator’s schedule on that day. Please keep us in mind for events down the road and do not hesitate to reach out to us again in the future. Sincerely, Tracey Kennedy Scheduling Office John Edwards for President |

Given the fact that Edwards just received an endorsement from SEIU Iowa, Edwards may have more reason than ever to focus on the concerns on Iowa voters. So lets not give up on him or any other candidates, keep the pressure on!

Please, unless you are a student organization, you may not sponsor a political candidate appearing on the UI Campus per UI rules. Daniel, any speakers you confirm will be sponsored by the Environmental Coalition. Others working with non-student groups are welcome to pursue candidates, just be aware that your organization cannot be listed as a sponsor if ANYONE gets confirmed a political candidate to appear at the Step It Up! events.

I have invited Governor Richardson to the Iowa Climate Caucus event on the Step It Up! website and forwarded that to the local Richardson staff.
|
|
Cool Robert,
Another bit o' bad news from Gravel, "Unfortunately, it appears that Gravel has a prior commitment, can't make it to the Caucus." But they did want to thank us for the invitation. I think the best tack is to get on the phones to the Iowa HQs of the remaining candidates. |
|
I spoke to Richardson's local office today to clarify that there are two separate Step It Up! events and highlighted the differences between the two. Just in case they were wondering why they received two invites from the same city.

I invited Al Franken (the comedian). He may very well be elected to the United States Senate from Minnesota, so his opinion certainly matters. Plus, he is incredibly popular and would bring a HUGE audience.
I also invited Nancy Menning, the individual I told you about who taught a course entitled Nature in Religious Thought & Ethics. It would be great to hear from someone who is not a politician. |
|
Sweet, it would be great to have either of them at the Iowa Caucus
On another note, there's a link to the IA climate caucus on the front page of Step It Up today, along with an interview I did with Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates, check it out http://stepitup2007.org//article.php?id=600 |

Hillary's IA schedulers are aware of Step It Up already, but can't promise anything.
I was one the phone today with Obama's Iowa City scheduler and we had a good conversation. |

Confirmed with Collin McDonnell at Hillary's campaign that he got our invite, he was short b/c he seemed busy, but now that we know they got our invite, we can keep contacting and keep the pressure on
Got a response from Grassley's scheduler that he can't make it, but I invited him to record a youtube spot to show his global warming leadership, we'll see if I hear anything back on that, here's the info I got back from them: Dear Daniel, Thank you for your kind invitation for Senator Grassley to participate in Step it Up on November 3. The Senator appreciates you thinking of him. Unfortunately, Senator Grassley has a previous commitment on that day and will not be able to attend. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 202-224-3744 or email me at emily_cook@grassley.senate.gov. Once again, Senator Grassley appreciates your invitation and asks you to please keep in touch. Sincerely, Emily Cook Iowa Scheduler Senator Chuck Grassley p: 202/224-3744 f: 202/224-5136 |

My speaker on religion and the environment is planning to go to Madison for an environmental film festival that day. She offered to give me some names. I'll check them out.
Ron Paul is a loon, crazy, nut-job. Did you see his Grist interview? http://www.grist.org/feature/2007/10/16/paul/index.html Glad to see some Obama people RSVPing. |

Hey Robert, got this email from Jason at Step It Up, wanted to check into your level of contact with the Richardson campaign before I responded:
I've had numerous e-mail / phone conversations with Bill Richardson's scheduling team recently, and they will definitely be in IA on the 3rd. This is very exciting, because all of your actions are looking great right now. The head of scheduling in IA is Tiffany Deinzer, and her contact info is as follows: 505 205 4993 tdeinzer@richardsonforpresident.com She's basing the decision on which event(s) BR will attend on her conversations with you guys. I gave her a quick rundown of the national scene, and gave her a solid amount of info on your events, but she wants more specifics. It would be great if you guys could contact her as soon as possible to chat about your events. She's almost always at her desk, so phone works well. |

Here's the response from Al Franken's staff - - No.
Robert: Thank you so much for inviting Al to speak about global warming in Iowa City on November 3rd. I regret he will be unable to attend because of scheduling conflicts. Al asked me to extend his gratitude for your invitation and sends his best wishes for a successful event. Please contact our Scheduler, Kathy Kostohryz, at kathy@alfranken.com if you have future events you would like Al to know about and possibly participate in. Thank you again. Daniel,
I am to meet with the people to confirm the Penatacrest reservation. They are going to decide whether or not to grant our request for the use of the space and I'm pretty worried because we don't really have an event as yet. I would feel a lot more comfortable if we could confirm today or before 1:30 tomorow (central time) a speaker. Can you call the campaigns again and see where they are at? |

What are the thoughts on inviting Governor Richardson? The guy I know at his local office seemed pretty interested in the event.
Also, who locally are we inviting? I'm still trying to catch up.
