Hi Michael,
In Georgia, in single state, from time immemorial there have been living many ethnics: Georgians, Jews, Abkhazians, Ossetians, Armenians, Azerbaijanians, Russians, Ukrainians, Estonians, Turkish, Iranians, Kurds, Assyrians, Greek, and more. Some information for reflection (thought): 1. There are 101,000 Abkhazians in Georgia. In 1989 in Abkhazia were living 525,061 inhabitants, among them ethnic Georgians-239,872, ethnic Abkhazians-93,267. More than 75% of families are of mixed marriage in Abkhazia. This is old tradition. In blood of Georgian Kings there always had been Abkhazian blood. In the early nineties from Abkhazia were expatriated 350,000 people. They were taken away or destroyed their property. This indeed is a crime! This is genocide! Today in Abkhazia live 215,972 inhabitants. 2. There are 164,000 Ossetians in Georgia (in South Osetia 65,340). Ossetian population is concentrated in the cities of Tskhinvali and Java. In South Osetia Osetian and Georgian settlements are in staggered rows and in 1989 there were living 99,000 inhabitants, Ossetians-65,340 and Georgians-33,660. In other regions of Georgia live about 100,000 ethnic Ossetians. Georgian-Ossetian mixed marriage families are ordinary occurrence. Mother of my cousin is Ossetian. And: if you examine carefully the map (see map on WiserEarth Group: “Meetings in Georgia, Caucasus”) you will see, that Great Caucasus Ridge is natural boundary from Russia and Georgia, from North and South areas. It is understandable that it would be more useful and optimal if Abkhazians and Georgians live on the south of the Great Caucasus Ridge, inside of a natural boundary, in a single state. And generally, historically this it was so. Also: as if North Osetia and South Osetia exist, once there was one Osetia. The Soviet government by the Russian 11th Red Army in 1921 annexed Georgia, and created the South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast. Till 1921 this region was called “Shida Kartli” (translation: “Inside Georgia”, other historic name: “Samachablo”). Do you know any country (nation) which lives on the different sides of the impenetrable ridge, the height of which is more than 5000 metre? And: does really anybody think that 93,000 Abkhazians or 65,000 Ossetians are able to perpetrate such horrors?! Certainly not! It was provocation! This is fact, that war was conducted by the Russian regular forces, commandoes, special services, gunman from the Russian Federation! Nowadays more than 80% of the inhabitants of Abkhazia and so-called South Ossetia are Russian citizens. This means, that citizens of one country illegally live in the other country. And does anybody really think that this is the right?! This is a latent, masked annexation! One great American man (Martin Luther King) said: “No justice, no peace!” Does the World really want such script? Temur |

Temur, thank you for your elaborate and well-founded argument! I really appreciate it! I had no idea. Obviously you have shared a lot of valuable history that I probably wouldn't have learned about through Google. Now I understand why the regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia are part of Georgia, and why suddenly there are some who want independence!
Now I see why the case of Kosovo is unique. |

SOS! Rescue Georgia!
In August 7, 2008 Russia attacked Sovereign Caucasus State-Georgia. Georgia is 250 times smaller than Russia. ![]() (Photograph: Irakli Gedenedze/Reuters)
Russia conducted airstrikes on Georgian targets on Friday evening. The air raid from Russia bombs all territory of Georgia, from East to West. Russia had started to bomb civil and economic infrastructure.Russian aircraft raided Tbilisi (bombardment). Several Russian aircrafts were stroked down. Thousands of people perished. Perished civilians, children and women. Towns and settlements are ravaged. Population lost homes, lost properties. For now more than 3,000 people are dead as a result of aggression!
(Wounded woman in Gori The escalation risked igniting a renewed and sustained conflict in the Caucasus region, an important conduit for the flow of oil from the Caspian Sea to world markets and an area where conflict has flared for years along Russia’s borders, most recently in Chechnya. This is the Russian full-scale direct aggression! Population is homeless, they have no simple belongings, food. The humanitarian and ecological catastrophe is imminent! Should one small nation be destroyed only because it is small?! Help us! We need humanitarian aid. We accept any support and aid: from any financial, to any material. Thank you. Any thoughts on this? Georgia is one of many countries affected by Kosovo's declaration, and the "West's" immediate recognition of their declaration. These declarations and recognitions in turn threaten to set a precedent for other regions in response.
