Habib's Garden

Connecting People to Weave a Better World

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Steve Habib Rose.  A number of us met this evening and thought that this group would be a fitting tribute. Lets use this group to recognize, honor and appreciate the many gifts and blessings he bestowed on so many of us. Please add yourself and your reflections.

I will remember Habib through his enthusiasm and unshattered conviction to building community and his gentle nature has always encouraged me to also keep visioning and working. It is Habib who made me realize that nothing good is too small to try to accomplish. Because of Habib, I started a nonprofit, work for another nonprofit and do as much as I can to build community. I will remember Habib because of his pure spirit of love.

I have been especially missing Habib this week after attending an interfaith celebration of the Sufi poet Rumi on Sunday. The kind of event at which I might have expected to see him -- you know, his Sufi name, "Habib," means "friend" in Arabic -- and it is surely one of the sweetest of the many names of God.

I was part of the organizing team for the Art of Community Northwest event in September, 2006.

Habib approached our team full of ideas and passion about the many different ways that would help the attendees connect and form an ongoing virtual community that would arise before, run in parallel during, and then sustain on beyond that 3 day conference. Unfortunately, he didn't have energy to work on this, the existing members of the team were already over-taxed, and we choose to not take on trying to add another major element to our large objective. So... the only thing that happened in that regard was that we emailed out a roster of attendees (that agreed with their info being shared).

I sampled a number of Habib's online networking endeavors over the years since we first connected. I found each of his efforts interesting and we had interesting conversations around the ideas. I never embraced any of them directly or contributed to his efforts or vision beyond my talk.

Like so many small, non-profit, community-focused efforts, Habib's actual ventures didn't seem to catch fire with others. I'm sad, for example, that there are not NeighborNets all over the world. If I'm just not informed about his endeavors, please help correct my thinking here.

That being said, lets consider an ecological metaphor, which I'm swiping from another now defunct non-profit effort. The ideas and passions that do not flourish in a particular plant colonize new, challenging terrain. As they struggle and then pass on, those colonizing plants provide a richer, more fertile compost that allows the next seedling a better chance of germinating, taking root, and growing stronger.

Given the many influences that some of these testimonials communicate, I am quite sure that Habib's indirect impacts will flourish in the form of many community-building efforts growing toward many forms of light.

Thank you Habib!

From the PeopleWeb list serve:

I knew Habib and loved and admired his tireless efforts in bringing and bridging the
communities together. He was one of kindest and gentlest souls I had the privilege
to know. I am so sorry to hear about his passage. His memory will remain in my heart
forever. I wish his wife much courage and patience during this difficult time.

Thank you Habib for being such an inspiring role model and a gentle leader to us.

This is heart breaking news. Steve knew how to give and give he did. In fact, the
giving spirit was so much of what defined him as a human being. He wanted to give us
all peace and community. His manner was gentle but he was courageous. He was
courageous because he had the courage of his convictions. In a world where we have
become separated, Habib sought to unite us. I know his soul is now reunited with
God. My heart goes out to all his friends and most of all his dear wife, Elaine.

Thank you for letting us know that Habib has moved on. I am sorry that I
never had the opportunity to meet him while he was with us, but I do know that
he is at peace and very happy. I can feel it strongly. He is doing the ultimate
networking...a higher level of gathering together of his soul group,
something I felt he was trying to implement here to the best of his physical
ability. Not an easy task in this 3d world.. It is hard to describe the joy I feel
for him and what he will be able to do collectively from where he is.
From a struggling earthly manifestation in the experiment of separation,
Meg
