Tiku,
Think I now understand your needs better.
Before presenting my thoughts on how WiserEarth can probably serve your needs, I'd like to clarify/inform the following points (which you may already know about):
So, in light of this, here's my thoughts on how WiserEarth can serve your needs with an emphasis on the main purpose of, in your own words, "fulfill all of our community's needs to network, communicate and collaborate, I think the most important thing is the function of geographic maps systems"
1. The taxonomy specific to usufruct;
2. To create editable maps specific for the taxa
First and foremost, WiserEarth is a community directory and networking forum, it is not a platform to perform collaborative image editing though it is a platform for collaborative text editing (as you know). Don't know if WiserEarth should direct its resources to enable the former (image editing), but I would say that's an overkill for the near future.
Thus, hinting from the blog article you mentioned, a solution for this would I imagine be:
3. To identify our community in a local context.
Answered.
Conclusions:
Hope this helps. Let me know if I misunderstood your needs, missed something or you would like to clarify my points.
Best wishes, Bowo |

Hello Peggy and Bowo,
I am just beginning to find my way through the groups and sub groups within the WiserEarth community. There is still quite alot to comprehend. To create our community network as a group on WiserEarth is something we definitely will consider.
The main reasons for wanting to create an independent website were to keep the focus on:
1. The taxonomy specific to usufruct; 2. To create editable maps specific for the taxa; and 3. To identify our community in a local context.
On the other hand, if we were to utilise existing infrastructure on the WiserEarth site, we could manage those things to fulfill our needs.
1. I would imagine the taxonomic structure of our community in the WiserEarth site to look like this:
Group Usufruct in the Byron Shire
Sub group Local food Community Gardens etc
Perhaps we would then need to become editors of the Areas of Focus to create our unique sub groups, or super groups. (I dont think these would need to be visible on the AoF page).
some examples City/Country Fingers (maps of farmers markets and local produce) Magic of the City (bioregional information) Sacred Sites (churches, cathedrals) Common Land (plots useful for growing) Bike paths (council maps converted to google maps) Fruit Trees (overhanging fruit)
These sub groups could be shared as they become more useful to other groups.
different sub groups. An example of this is fruit tree mapping.
3. Identifiable community. This is about simplicity. I don't think this really applies anymore. It seems the benefits of being connected to a larger global community are much greater than keeping within small localised ones.
So, if it were possible that WiserEarth be changed so it can fulfill all of our community's needs to network, communicate and collaborate, I think the most important thing is the function of geographic maps systems. It is the smaller detailed network of patterns that our community could use within the larger Wiserearth community. It is similar to the structure of a network of fungi and bacteria within the soil.
Our group will be brainstorming in the next few days and would like to keep in contact. Please forgive me if I have not understood the process of forming a group properly.
Thankyou again

Tiku, Building WiserEarth was (and still is) an exciting yet very consuming project, specifically around the software aspect. Building softwares are costly, it requires expertise and also ongoing maintenance. Once one has a software, you still need to spend a lot of time on awareness and outreach around the solution you offer.
The biomimicry took the Wiser Platform to customize it (they will launch their site in Fall). The reason they needed to do so is because of the specificity of the field they serve, and the need for a taxonomy specific to biomimicry. It seems like you may need to do what you need without spending time on softwares, there are a lot of open source softwares out there that might serve you. Also, as Bowo mentioned, there are ways for you to use WiserEarth in its current form. Thanks for what you do, Peggy |

Greetings Tiku,
I was just wondering why would you want to setup your own wiserplatform-based social network instead of using existing WiserEarth site? What features are lacking from WiserEarth to fulfill your needs (in your own words) of a "a map and a directory of this network of patterns within each local community, that is designed in such a way that each individual act is always helping to create these larger community patterns. A resource for communication and cooperation, that is created and managed by the community is needed for patient and piecemeal growth of the community. In essence an infrastructure through which to collaborate our efforts and create a community that has these global patterns in it." ? Or to put it another way, how would you want WiserEarth be changed so it can fulfill your community's needs to network, communicate and collaborate? Reading the usufruct link you provided, I'm guessing that by creating numerous WiserEarth groups corresponding to the number of communities you have there and building up connection and sharing resources between those groups, should be sufficient and even place your local network of communities within a larger ecosystem of communities and resources around the globe that would form during the course of WiserEarth growth in the years ahead. I imagine that your local community can even inspire other local communities in different countries by being present, visible and active in WiserEarth. If this is of use to you, I have this ongoing conversation with Ben Brangwyn of the Transition Network where Ben is on the quest to find the perfect software platform for their initiatives (an international network of towns, village and cities collaborating to adapt to the duo-threat of climate change and peak oil). He provided me with a link to the ideal platform that can fulfill all their needs at http://transitiontowns.org/TransitionNetwork/TransitionSoftwarePlatform. To date, if he were to use existing platforms, he said that WiserEarth is the one best equipped when compared to other platforms (CrowdVine, Ning, Project Dirt, Celsias, MyEcoEarth, MakeMeSustainable , etc.) Perhaps there is something useful there for your initiative as well. Appologies for chipping in my two cents uninvited. Kind regards, Bowo |

Hello Peggy
Thankyou for your last reply. Although the usufruct directory has remained in its first stages, I have since made the decision that it is a worthy project. Having taken your suggestions to have a look around at existing directories I have discovered a gap in the amount of sustainable directories in Australia, and most noticably within my own community in Byron Bay. The concept of Usufruct seems at the core of the sustainability movement here. The Usufruct Directory is different to others because it is fundamentally based on usufruct, A pattern language and has a focus on relocalisation. It is hoped to a bike centric (rather than car centric) map of local places and includes maps such as farmers markets, sacred sites, waterholes, and fruit trees. The Usufruct design brief is here if you would like to view. http://www.permaforesttrust.org.au/Members/tikuhelen/usufruct/ I would appriciate any feedback from how the wiser earth project has been created. As I have mentioned before, I am not a programmer, but would like to understand the work involved in getting something such as Wiser Earth together, including; how many people in starting up and maintaining, how to maintain, what are the costs involved, any other examples where organisations have used wiser earth platform. kind regards tiku |

hi Peggy,
Im interested in creating a website that maps out local communities, local food systems and local nature, based on the idea of 'usufruct'. I would like it to work similar to Wiser Earth, as community editable directory, and perhaps I would like to use the Wiser Earth platform.
I do not have any knowledge of writing code, but would like to seek some professional advice before starting. I can send you some more information if you need.
It would be great if you had any advice on where to start.
thankyou

hi
I have a question for the systems administrator. Is it possible to get a contact?
thankyou kindly

To Peggy:
Just discovered the following sentences at the bottom of Mbedr's website:
Mbedr is not affiliated with, endorsed or supported by Flickr or Yahoo!. It uses a small amount of code from FNClient. To leave comments or bug reports, see this blog post. For downloads and development notes, there's a project scratchpad. Once I've cleaned up the code, I'll release it so you can host your own instance.
Looks like the code will be released under some sort of public license. An integration with WiserEarth platform? Will suggest this in the suggestion group later.
