Sustainable Technology and Techniques for Automobiles

A discussion forum for news, ideas, technology, and techniques for automobiles. Climate change demands a transportation system with fewer CO2 emissions. Given the massive bias toward the personal automobile in our infrastructure, lower carbon cars must become available and affordable. Anyone is free to add their voice to this discussion. I'm all about the Aptera

http://aptera.com/

Got to thank Lawrence for this one.

230 MPG in a diesel hybrid, possibly even getting 300 MPG if your smart about driving

I would wait till the kinks are worked out first though.

In the long run though, it seems that roads are not efficient enough, too much wasted on paving and space, better to upgrade public transport, and urbanize in a hurry.

On the topic of news feeds/blogs, http://www.autobloggreen.com/ is not a bad place to start. Part of the commercial 'weblogs, inc.' (owned by AOL).

A new delivery truck that can recharge its batteries in 10 minutes:

It takes a specific high energy charger to do it, so it would need new infrastructure. But if we could install electric chargers at gas stations, then we could do away with all the "stranded in my electric car" worries, anyhow, its interesting, if not the silver bullet answer

Hey, all:

Hey, Daniel: I just noticed your item about the Mitsubishi electric car. While this is extremely promising, it is only one half of the critical, essential, required solution. In fact, without the other half, it is not a solution at all. We absolutely have to get away from fossil fuels, but not just for some energy applications, but for ALL energy applications.

With the current means of producing electricity, electric cars only displace the source of increased Carbon in the environment. The source moves from tail pipe to power plant smokestack. Since we have not embraced Wind and Sun (and given current moves in the Congress in Washington DC USA we may be delayed for years), we would need just in the USA 100s of new coal-burning power plants to support a fleet of the new electric cars. Substitute the appropriate number of nukes or hydroelectric dams. All of these: coal-fired or nuke plants, or dams, all are not the least bit sustainable: all require the use of an earthly resource and all require environmental destruction, and some extend the destruction to accidents: witness the recent oil spills. Need I say anything at all about wars for oil?

The only solution to complement electric cars is a fully installed sustainable energy electric source, including Wind and Sun. We have to supplant the above traditional destructive solutions with wind turbines and photovoltaics, preferably on an individual residential, business, and industry scale. Point-of-use generation is the best solution.

There is one huge bright spot here. Since I live off-the-grid, and I have to waste power, frequently on a daily basis, an electric car is something I have wished for for years. I currently drive a fossil fuel-burning pickup, which makes me part of the problem, but an all electric car I could plug in each day would be a great improvement. I will watch the progress on Mitsubishi's car. Thanks for the info.

David
Messages done with sustainable energy, with Wind and Sun!

david, no doubt that electricity produced from burning coal is not a source of clean electrons
but what i do understand about that is the amount of carbon per mile is lower from an electric car charged with electricity from utilities with even the highest mix of coal plants than the carbon/mile from petrol hogs
and that electricity can come from off peak hours
your point is good though, if we all switched to electric cars without changing the way we make electricity, we'll go from horrible to slightly terrible, not the shift we need

of course, I would hope that if we made a big move towards electric cars in this country that we would also start making clean electrons to put in them
