Hi Kat, hi again Ursaminor...

Ursa, regarding sites that are using or experimenting with OpenID:

http://openid.yahoo.com/

http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/openid_vs_bigco.php

http://journals.aol.com/panzerjohn/abstractioneer/entries/2007/02/15/aol-and-openid-where-we-are/1406

http://blog.openiddirectory.com/

Clearly momentum is building. One of the main OpenID organizations, I think it was openid.net, sponsored a $5000 prize for the first Open Source web application server to support OpenID. I think Plone won, plone.org. And...insert quick google search here...you are in luck! Drupal has a module for OpenID....

http://drupal.org/project/openid

The OpenID spec has two parts, a "consumer" and a "provider." The terms have morphed over time, and I don't do a very good job of keeping up...they used to be called something like "client" and "server." At any rate you get the drift. Sites can be both or they can be one or the other. Yahoo, for example, provides OpenID services for other sites, but they do not acknowledge (consume) the credentials of other OpenID providers. In other words Yahoo users could potentially use their OpenID/Yahoo creditentials to log into sites that accept OpenID for authentication, but you can't use your myopenid.com account to gain access to Yahoo assets.

Wow, I am really liking all of these ideas! The OpenID issue is something that has been requested before, and is definitely on the radar of WiserEarth. In the mean time, directing members to your group page is a great start, since that is where most of the action takes place.

I like the idea of a finder application in facebook, the original idea was to create a WE search function application where fb users can find organizations, areas of focus, groups etc. but the concern is that it is not engaging enough. Ideally the application would keep users coming back to WiserEarth.

One idea is to have some kind of featured cause or organization that appears in the application window on a daily basis. Another is to make a trivia based application, where fb users have to search the site for the answer to a question about environmental, social, and indigenous issues and compete with each other to see who gets the info faster.

These are all just ideas, I have no idea how difficult it would be to create something like this. That is a topic for the technical section of this forum...

Thank you for naming it! I think this is an important thing to consider. Do you know of sites that use OpenID now? We would consider implementing it on our site (www.globalonenessproject.org), because we want our users to get involved in WiserEarth. Our site is built in drupal.

And back to Facebook -- how does one make WiserEarth application fun and interactive? One idea is you could use the idea of the FB "friend finder" -- but with the WE ap you could find people and orgs connected through areas of focus using Network matrix (not sure what to call that thing)...it at least has a visual interface.

Hello Ursaminor,

You are a describing a mechanism available via a technology called OpenID....

It has popped up several times in discussions on wiserearth.org....

Cool stuff.

I think this is a great idea. I would personally like to see WiserEarth become as popular (and powerful) as Facebook, but obviously stay mission-focused. Ideally, the application would port their FB membership over to WiserEarth, so they don't have to sign up twice. There are a lot of groups on FB with a lot of members, posting events, etc. just like the WE groups. Wouldn't it be great if there could be a seamless integration? For example, our Global Oneness Project Group on facebook has 100+ members, but I doubt most of those people have a WE account, or even know it exists.

I guess I am not answering the question about what a WiserEarth FB application would actually do, just expressing enthusiasm for some thoughtful integration between the sites. Facebook has numbers, WiserEarth has purpose. Together, unstoppable!

The idea is to create an application that will sit in a users profile and link back to WiserEarth. This application needs to be interactive, and engage facebookers on an ongoing basis. Something like "scrabbulous" or the other facebook games is good because there is a reason for users to constantly use it, however, the WiserEarth application should engage/educate users about environmental, social juscice, and indigenous rights issues (keeping with the spirit of the site). Thoughts anyone?
