Here are several nonprofit programs in the Oakland area that may be of help,
Community Alliance with Family Farmers (http://www.caff.org/) and specifically their Community Food Systems program (http://www.caff.org/programs/eco_index.shtml)
HOPE Collaborative (http://www.oaklandfoodandfitness.net/) is working on creating a sustainable, just and equitable food system here in Oakland (http://www.oaklandfoodandfitness.net/foodsystemsactionteam). This is a Kellogg’s Foundation Funded program that is in the research stage of the process…
Center for Ecoliteracy (http://www.ecoliteracy.org/), lots of information on different youth/children local food related programs, all very neatly and fully lade out…
Community Food Security Coalition (http://www.foodsecurity.org/) has a host of programs (http://www.foodsecurity.org/programs.html) that may well be applicable to your situation.
California Food and Justice Coalition (http://www.foodsecurity.org/california/index.html), which has programs that are not just centered on kids…
I will say that the funding streams for such programs are centered on children and youth, we work with seniors, and for the moment, almost everyone wants to fund children and youth…
Our program, in Oakland, is the only Meals on Wheels program that has gone Farm to Table in the country… there are many opportunities out there to support your local food farmers, feed local healthy food to your population and create local jobs… we are doing it!

Are there existing models between private farmers who grow the food and non-profit organizations who help educate the community, market the idea, and get broad based support? In the eyes of funders, is the educational component (the non-profit) important enough to merit funding for such efforts, or is there some different relationship that needs to be established?
As our project is in transition, and is in need of funds to help capitalize on this great opportunity that has presented itself, any and all feedback would be welcomed! So if you know funders, farmers, or other orgs. that could provide feedback or support, send em my way!
