Enough said. This is a massive field and growing, and is quite different- though interrelated- to sustainable building, sustainable cities, sustainable materials/production. I'd love to see an entire main Area of Focus devoted to Sustainable Design, and change Sustainable Cities and Design to Sustainable Cities with an Urban Planning subportal.

I think sustainable product design is different than sustainable building, cities, and materials/production and it would be okay with seeing it become an area of focus. I would like to see it be a subportal for now though, under Technology, because it does go with: 'Appropriate Technology', 'Biomimicry', and 'Sustainability and Technology'. Maybe this could change in the future, but doing so will result in a lot of other rearranging I think.

Also, Sustainable Cities and Design becoming Sustainable Cities is okay too, although I think I like Sustainable Urban Development better.

As I started looking around though, I noticed a few things that also might need to be rearranged.

A Sustainable Design main area of Focus has now been added, with Biomimicry, Green Roofs, Sustainable Building and Sustainable Materials subportals

We too at Design Earth have been 'round and round and up and down' the amazing taxonomy here, finally settling in under "Sustainable Design," but the glaring omission there is "Sustainable Products," which is still a huge area for industrial designers, product developers and inventors. It is different, as Michael says, than Sustainable Building. We think Sustainable Materials is great, and begs a link to the European Union's R.E.A.C.H. program attempting to regulate 30,000 chemicals. We've narrrowed our own taxonomy to 11 subcategories under our purview of sustainable products, systems and economies.

While on the subject, isn't "Green Roofs" a subset of "Sustainable Buildings"? There are Green Wall systems too. This is fun!

I think this demonstrates pretty well why we need a community editable system for Areas of Focus/Interests/whatever they need to be called. The part that WiserEarth ought to supply is a list of logical relationships users can use to relate Areas. Beyond this, we should allow an infinite number of Areas, as is the case in tagging structures.
